Unhappy Leaking Coolant and Oil.....

My 96 Taurus has been lightly leaking some oil ( a quart every three to four months ) for some months now. Just the other day I noticed a coolant smell while driving. As it turns out I am leeking coolant. It appears to be leeking from the front freeze plug, maybe a little from the head gasket on the front head. Fortunately oil and coolant have not mixed at all. It appears to be an external leak only. I am relatively new to my area ( Columbus, OH ). I don't know any mechanics around here. I have made some calls and people want about $1300 to so the head gaskets and $300-700 for the freeze plug. Does this sound legit? I tried some stop leak radiator additive with no success. Any suggestions?? Thanks

The prices seem a bit high. Go to www.cartalk.com and look around for the Mechanics Survey and type in your zip code. Get some estimate from them and you should be okay. Good Luck.
