i need to change my oil and i was wondering if it is better to have an Acura oilf ilter, or if anything is fine. also, is it true that if you use different oils then the car may not run right? so if i changed to synthetic oil it wouldn't do anyhthing it shouldn't because it is different then what was in it originally. Thanks.

Well, usually brand names are OEM quality. The box should tell you if it meets those standards. Im not sure what you mean next. You mean mixing oils??? When I get mine changed I use what honda recommends.

I really like amsoil products they have worked great for me and others that I know. They have one if the best filters out the only filter that comes close is the K&N and they are really about the same quality here check them out

Honda/Acura OEM filter are very strong compared to most on the market. Like the K&N and other high quality filters are strong as well.
5w-30 is recommended. Dont forget to change the drain plug crush washer. I suggest also pre-filling the oil filter with as much oil as possible before installing - wipe of filter mounting plate - make sure new filter gasket is lubed.

Using too thick of an oil will reduce engine performance & cause extra wear. Synthetic should actually free up some power & switching from synthetic back to standard oil is fine as long as the engine was not filled from the factory & broken in with synthetic(Corvette, Viper, Porsche, etc.) I run synthetic 5w-50 when I get some track time, daily driving 0w-30 or 5w-30 synthetic

As far as change intervals with synthetic, I change mine every 3K or 3months, more on the civic. Some oils claim 7500 or 15K mile intervals, I would still change mine every 3K. Its better to be .5qts under-filled than to be .5qts over-filled.

Actually, Honda just redisigned the oil filters. I think they made them a little cheaper then before, using cardboard on some parts of the filter. So now I am a bit reluctant to purchase some of the Honda/Acura OEM filters. If you want some filter comparisons here are a couple of links:

The latter link is a bit old but still somewhat relevant. One thing is to make sure you stay away from Fram. Fram filters are not well made, even by studies by two different people, both came to the conclusion that Fram is the worst. I personally like Mobil 1 or STP filters. Ask any mechanic too, an oil filter is not something you want to skimp on.

BTW, you can get honda filters that you can use in Acuras for much cheaper and they are exactly the same thing.

K&N makes awesome filters.

you can switch to synthetic easily. mobil1 is completely compatible with conventional oils, so you dont have to run a engine flush or anything, just let it drain for a while to get most of it out..

I have also read that Fram makes poor filters. STP is a better, commonly available filter.
I've never used Honda/Acura filters. I get pissed off when I even look at the dealership, much less darken its money-grubbing doors.
