92' S10 Problems:

I've got a 92 s10 that i bought with 145000 miles on it, one night when i was driving home it started sputtering and the accecelarator was very sluggish to respond, i got it almost half way home at under 50mph (wouldnt go any faster) , when it died on the side of the highway, i got out and looked under the veichle and the catalalyc converter was cherry red . finally after about 10 mins of waiting , it started back up and i could again drive slowly twards home at 50 mph, i got it 3 miles from home and it died at a friends house. I figured my problem was that my catalalyc converter was plugged up, got it home and cut off the converter, and it still ran shitty, so i did the following things to it afterwards : changed the oil, cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, fuel injector, o 2 sensor, changed the gas in the tank, the intank fuel pump filter, checked the fuses, electrical connections, inline fuel filter, throttle body lines , basicly one hell of a tune up, and it still ceases to run, i cannot figure out the problem with it, i'll try to start it , but all it does is turn over and backfires, oh i broke the locking key cylinder off the steering colom , and now i have to start it with a flathead screwdriver, could this be the problem? i drove with it the locking cylinder broke for about 2 months before it started giving me shit, so if it is why is it just now starting to affect the veichle? ANY INSIGHT INTO A VERY BIG PROBLEM WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Re: 92' S10 Problems:

What engine do you have?
You may have the wires in the wrong order....1-6-5-4-3-2 in a clock wise direction if it is a 4.3.V-6
You mentioned throttle body lines, so if its a V-6 with TBI, check the fuel pressure first, should be between 9-14 psi.

Re: 92' S10 Problems:

Well that puts a different spin on things! Thats what you get when you assume.

Lets start with the basics
First, check compression..that will eliminate any internal engine problems.
Also did you inspect the distibutor and the pick-up coil?

UH YEAH I think he already cut off the Cat. .........
Seems as though you were atleast able to run it before you did your tune up. You said all it does is backfire now. Make sure you installed everything right before you continue. Or has the problem gotten so bad that now all it does is backfire? Does it run at all? You might want to do the compression check like GMmerlin suggested. What about the trucks computer? Take a look at the plugs see if your firing on all 4 and thier condition. How many miles on motor?

Angry

Sure sounds like you have jumped time, NOT ignition timimg but Camshaft timing ie: timing chain/belt off a tooth or two.

it has 165k miles on it, and it only really backfires when i push the gas pedal , as for the cam timing , i checked the timing and the timing is/has been dead on since the first time i checked into it, as for the wires being in a wrong place, not on my watch .i think that its an electrictal sensor that deals with the emmissions systems, i have realized that , i had that very day ran 50:1 two stroke mix in the truck ( dumb move) as i had ran out of gas several miles before a station , put in two gallons of mixed and then filled to half tank on way out of town, after 13 miles it was running worth a shit. this i think narrows my problem down but still cannot pinpoint which sensor it is, i would like to know which sensors in a 92 s10 2.5litre would go bad after exposure to mixed fuels? help is appreciated. thanks

Wow a 2 stroke S-10. Does that come in the V6 model?
Anyway the O2 sensor might have been affected but I couldnt imagine it would run that bad. You might want to check the knock sensor since it can send signals that would adjust your timing. Have you checked for top dead center of NO.1 cylinder making sure rotor is right on NO.1 plug?

Is this motor TBI or carb? If TBI check the O2 sensor. If this motor has one CHANGE IT. It regulates fuel mix. Too much oil or crap in the exhaust will foul it up. also check the egr valve and make sure it is not stuck open. Then look for a knock sensor, this regulates timing, although i believe it is in the 02 sensor.
