Re: Achtung! Don't try this at home
Decent article.
In the March 03 copy of Evo magazine, they tried to do 200mph on the road with: RUF R Turbo 542bhp Pagani Zonda S 555bhp Audi TT Bimoto 740bhp Lotus Esthi 414bhp RS4-powered Elise TVR Tuscan S 390bhp The TVR Tuscan S got to 180mph before the tester had to back off, but he didnt think it had much left in it. The Lotus Esthi got to 182mph but the driver had to back off. The Pagani Zonda S sat at 197mph and wouldnt reach the magic 200, confirming doubts that its 220mph top speed is but pure myth The TT Bimoto broke the 200mph mark and recorded 205mph but suffered from serious stability issues. And of course, the RUF R Turbo got to 200mph, on an incline and felt 'utterly stable and unstressed', according to the tester. Alois RUF claims a top speed of 214mph for the R Turbo, i believe it achieved 213mph in official tests. Ruf continues to make great cars

Re: Achtung! Don't try this at home
thats a cool story i've always wondered what it would like to be on the autobahn. I'm from Canada and i've never seen more than 120km/h speed limits lol(not that i've always obeyed them). 120km/h is only around 72mph btw though im sure you all knew that.

Re: Re: Achtung! Don't try this at home
The limits on the motorway here in the UK are also 70mph, which is completely unreasonable as everyone drives at 100mph+ on the M1. My PB is 115
, but 90-100 is a relaxed and safe (when conditions allow) cruising speed in modern cars, so i dont see why I should have to pootle around at 70. I once had to pick up my gf from a train station over 150 miles from my house at around 1am. The wide, wide motorway was empty, almost deserted, but i got stuck behind a cop who was doing 75-80 for most of the way there. I didnt dare overtake him, as they can give you a ticket (and points on your license) if you exceed the limit by 10% + 3mph, so that would be 70+7+3 = 80mph. What a f*ckin joke. Cops in the UK are more interested in jailing motorists than rapists. F*cking idiots. In Germany, there are no speed limits on many parts of the autobahn, and the country has one of the best records for road deaths. It's the way to go, as far as im concerned, as long as driving tests are thorough.

Speaking of stretching your legs in autobahns it would be interesting to try this (completely road legal) car...
http://www.917archive.com/917030/917030.htm wonder if anyone still uses it..... |

try this at home...
Now i've seen everything (well maybe an F1 street is next)
http://www.carclassic.com/html/AJ54.htm note that the Dauer 962 was assembled from 962 parts but from scratch - it was more of a new car using 962 components unlike this "real" 962C racecar converted for street use. |

Re: Achtung! Don't try this at home
i've always wanted to drive on the autobahn with a diablo....
My ford laser reaches a top speed of 130km/hr... from 90km/hr on ward, i'm in top gear (4th) and the entire car starts shaking, the gear stick starts first, then at 100, the windows...110...the doors, then 120 the rest of the car. |

Re: Achtung! Don't try this at home
i was on the autobahn a few times when i was in germany. at the time i didnt have my license but my friend who is an electrical engineer for BMW did. he got to test drive all the new bimmers. 745i, 760li, 745d, 520i and 530i. all of them were limited to 250 kmh, but it was still fun.

yeah, those damn 250km/h limiters......... seems though that things maybe changing....You can now order some top AMG Merc's without the limiter while at the same time getting a different suspension set-up and tyre size to cope with the extra speed. Meanwhile the SLR is the first Merc since A LONG time that is offered with no limiter whatsoever. Also, BMW sold their M3 CSL with a no-limiter option though you had to have a racing licence to order that option! (we can always get ours second hand though.....). And there's always the various Alpinas, Schnitzers, Brabus's etc etc who will remove the dreaded limiter at a small cost. Alternatively you can shop next door at Porsche... (and drive past sportscars in your 266km/h SUV)
