The only help I can offer is the experience I had with a manual shift 1994 Ford Ranger (4sp/OD). When the outside temp. started dropping below 40 degrees the tranny started emitting a whine, and the colder it got, the higher pitch the whine. Other than that though, it was shifting fine.

At the time the truck had 82,000 miles so I figured I would change the oil in the tranny. A shop manual I had said use the 80/90 gear oil, and when I inquired at my local Napa store, they said their books called for Automatic Tranny oil! Sooo, I did some research on the web, and found some tranny oil called Red Line ( it was mentioned on a couple of mustang forums), anyway, anything I could read/find on it stated it was some good stuff, so ordered some and put it in my truck.(By-the-way, it was a 75w80 oil.........I think Penzoil and Quaker State offer something similar now, but I had a hard time finding it)

It didn't whine nearly as bad as it did before. In fact, I could not detect any noise unless the temp was near 10 degrees or below, and at that point it would make some noise until it warmed up.

The only other thing I can add is I put another 40,000 miles on the truck before we got rid of it, and never had any further problems with the tranny. Good luck.
