Re: changing tranny fluid and filter

Straight fluid and filter change is just like any other car. I used a Fram kit last time. It has two filters and the gasket. Clean both sealing surfaces good(acetone), and to make sure of no leaks, I used Permatex OEM Sensor Safe RTV lightly on both sides of the gasket. It has worked great. Don't over tighten the pan bolts but remember to snug them after a few weeks. Save several dollars by getting ATF in one gallon jug. Check level hot, running in park. Don't be surprised if it does'nt even touch the dipstick cold and not running. Have fun!

How much fluid should I get to change out the transmission fluid? Also do you guys put in transmission fluid only or add a sealer conditioner to it also?

your owners manual should tell you how much to put in. and I never put any sealant in there tranny fluid never leaked, but make sure you after you change everything a few weeks later tighten the bolts around the pan again. make sure none are loose.

Also, when you have the bottom pan off and make sure you remove the side pan drain plug so it drains also. This will make sure all the fluid is drained except what is in the converter.

Re: changing tranny fluid and filter

Just finished changing it. It took exactly 2 gallons to fill it back to the full mark.

According to my 97 FSM the 4T80-E will take 8 qt. for the bottom pan and side cover, 12.6 qt. for an tranny overhaul, and 15 qt. to refill a completly dry tranny.
