Question Excessive Brake Pad Wear 2002 Wagon L

I own a 2002 Subaru Legacy Wagon w/ 42,000 miles & auto tranny (4 cyl engine). I bought this car new (<100 miles).

The brake pads on this car have worn almost completely out. The front wheels have about 15% of pads left. On the rear wheels, the pads on the passenger side wheel are significantly more worn than the pads on the driver side wheel. In fact, the pads on the rear passenger wheel are nearly gone now.

The car does not have a tow package.

I have never had brake pads wear out this quickly on any other car I have owned (including anothor Subaru). It is also strange that the rear wheels are wearing so unevenly. I believe that the braking system is defective. Do you have any idea what type of component failure could be the cause of this problem.

I am concerned if I just have brake pads replace, I will have to get them replaced again in another 40,000 miles.

Chad
