Hey, i'm kinda new to drawing cars....i've done some drawing in the past, drawn SOME cars but mostly just cars that i have pics of or whatever....That stuffs cool and all, but what interests me is drawing wacky concept style cars......
My biggest problem is coming up with an idea that doesnt look clearly like a hacked up verson of a car that already exists.... After that, i have a problem with making it look 3 dimensional.....Sure, i can draw a nice looking car from the side, but no demension to it at all...Any tips for this? I know most of the stuff comes purely from practice and more practice, but I'm sure some of you veterans at drawing cars can give me some advice on how to get started, different tips/techniques, exerciese, etc. to help improve my skills. Thanks in advance, -Chris |

Okay, I'm not the greatest drawer to don't take my advicce to the grave. But just about all I do is draw concept cars. They are not wacky and featuristic, but they don't look exactly like everything else. I tihnk you really have to get a car or two to base the design on. Even if the drawing looks similar to the original car, make changes and add your own touch. You will notice how you get better with practice.

Since I'm an artist, and i frequently draw cartoons, and cars, I'll help ya out.
First of all, when your trying to go 3d, start out with a flat cube... wait, thats a big contradiction... anyhoo, heres a Nissan Skyline R34 that I did...and if you look closelt, you can see the cube i started out with when I started it.

Re: Drawing concept style cars help please
well first off, your pic doesnt work red race. second, lets see ur drawings speeding penguin. after that maybe we can tell what your problem is easier. but my advice is to get some drawing books(how to draw cars like a pro by thom taylor, preferably). he explains 3d and junk like dat. u make a 3d rectangular cube at what ever angle you want... maybe someone with a scanner can show you the cube idea... it works... for me at least.

Okay well after seeing that cartoon tutorial i decided to give it a shot.....
i wanted to try something different besides the C4 'Vette used as an example, so i printed out a pic of a Porsche 944 and took that, along with the printed out thread, with me to Drivers Ed class....we were just watching a movie so i sorta sketched it out there.......it turned out AWFUL imo so when i got home i decided to give the C4 'Vette a try, it turned out a LITTLE better.....but both drawings were done in under half an hour... I was in no way attempting to make these drawings clean and neat, but rather just to see if i could do a half decent job. The 'Vette i sorta like but the 944 can go to hell for all i care :-P haha Anywho, lets say screw the more advanced 'concept' drawings, lets just stick with car drawings in general...besides making them cleaner and neater and spending more time, what can you see in these pics (sry the 944 didnt scan good) that you could advise me on fixing or whateveR? |

well they 're not too bad, i mean they can get alot better. well i think that for making a cartoon look cartoonish and fun to look at, your drawings shouldnt be as pointy on the ends/side. on the 944, the hood needs to not be so straight, make the car bend, give it agression. also, the hood needs to be a little longer to make it look to scale. you should either make the hood longer or make the window a bit smaller. the 944 should be lower to the ground as well. as for the corvette, i didnt see too many problems other than the pointyness and the bottoms of the tires should be level with the ground, but thats not too much of a big deal. since your are sorta new to car drawings, i think u might need to spend a little more time and give a bit more detail. its okay if your drawings take a long time. as you get better and better, (might take some time) the time it takes you to draw may lessen. i know u said u didnt give these cars too much time and didnt go into that much detail and that is fine. sorry if i sound a little stern or mean. im not trying to critisize you. well these are my thoughts on your drawings. hope this helps you
good luck and keep on drawing j dawg

Re: Drawing concept style cars help please
for 3D: start very simple. its a progression. start with small, boxy, ugly, generic cars. then do the same but give them, some contours and more modern carlike shapes. eventually try to actually draw a real car. start slow. dotn try to be as good as some of the guys on here. they're insanely good.
