95 Neon Problems

I've got a 95 Neon as my commuter with 157,000 highway miles. This past week the following problem arose:

Severe Grinding noise during slow deceleration >15MPH. Similar Grind during accelleration to 15MPH. Feels like it is in the front axle or tranny. This occurs after every stop and start, but is more servere with harder braking (I normally downshift). Once this grind starts the car will slowly grind to a halt without the brake depressed. Then labors to start rolling but once I clear 15MPH she's as smooth as the day I bought her. Also with any slow speed coasting (>20MPH) then acceleration a thumping squeak is heard from the front end.

To pass the last NYS inspection (May) I had to have the front ball joint replaced.

Any ideas?

I bought the car in Febuary with 146,000 for $350.

I bit the bullet and got it checked professionally. A caliper froze and wore out the pad. I'm gettin the front brakes done (calipers, rotars and pads).
Thank god for Phoenix Imports in East Rochester, NY. I'm gettin out of this one quick and cheap.

Here's to the next 40,000 miles.
