Question question about the speedometer

Hey, everyone. I have this problem on my 1995 Jetta III city edition. It's the 2.0. My question is that the speedometer and the rev. meter dont work most of the time on it. The only time it works is after it has had a long time to cool off, it seems. As it usually works the first time I start the car in the mornings. But once I turn off the engine and start it anytime after that, it wont work. Any help would be very much appreciated. Also, if you could tell me about how much it would cost to fix, that would be great too. Thank you.

Oh, yeah. I forgot. JETTAS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well speedometers work off a cable that spins, and the tachometer (not the revmeter) works off of an electrical pulse coming off your coil pack. so the problem off the two of them not working is two different problems. the speedometer cable is either loose or needs to be replaced. might need speedometer cable oil squirt in it. the tach may have a short in the wiring or be corroded???

Re: question about the speedometer

I have seen this problem in Jetta's. The Instrument cluster is actually electronic on this model. It has a ribbon circuit in the cluster itself. I usually just replace the cluster, labor is too high to replace the circuit itself. But this will fix your problem.

Well, I jus replaced the cluster and it seems to have fixed the problem, even though I do get ocassional complaints from it, but it might be the speed sensor going too. Anyway, the dealer sold the me cluster for roughly 260. If you don't mind the possibility of it not working, or if can get a guarantee of some sort, you can probably buy it online. I saw a new cluster for the 2000 Cabrio for 150 dollars.
