Stalling out
Hi, I have an 1984 regal with a v6 231 3.8l, nothing fancy. I had new plugs and wires put on. After, the car drove like it was in second (power wise speaking). The next day I started it and when I put it in reverse or drive it would stall, then start right back up. It will idle fine, but as soon as i give it any gas, it stalls out from idle. Not sure what could be the problem. Please help, this is my work car and I hate to keep impossing on people for rides.

Frequently, ther problem here is the IAC, or idle air control. Its job is to allow the correct amount of air into the idle passages to allow the correct idle speed. The computer's response is to add fuel according to the programmed air flow. If the IAC passage is dirty, (very likely), the dirt will interfere with the smooth changes in air flow the IAC is supposed to provide. This will interfere with the smooth transition from various engine loads. You might try cleaning everything in the area of the IAC, interior wise, including the pintle of the IAC. Do not get solvent into the IAC motor. Something else to try is to tap in the air flow meter. If this creates a stumble, it is likely that the meter is defective and reacting to vibration. Ray
