So...how much does it cost to do it yourself?
Hey All, nice informative board you got here...I've been toying around with the idea of getting a 240SX and making it all Sleighty like, heh, just had a couple of n00bie questions...
~Well for one thing, everyone I've talked to says the SR20DET swap is "such an easy swap", well I have a little experience with working on cars, learning more day by day....is it really that easy? ~Me from LI, NY how much does it cost to rent/buy the equipment to do the swap? (engine lift/crane/whatever else is necessary (let's say I have no tools)) well...that's it for now....I'll let you guys do your thang and thanks for your replies in advanced ~Chris |

When do you plan on doing this?
Not blowing my own horn, here, but I'd say I'm pretty skilled and have done many an engine pull in my days. The only problem is, since high school is gone, I have no where else to do these things anymore. Otherwise, I'd throw the teacher a cut of the money I make from friends wanting me to do thier work, and he'd turn his head when i needed the shop. Anyway... If you just so happen to plan on saving money over the winter for your car, and doing the swap in the summer we'll do ours together and go half and half on the tools (I have everything but the hoist thing or any lifting method) and I'll help you with yours if you give me a hand with mine. I'm going RB25DET, so it'll be a tad harder than the SR. I only ask cause you're somewhat local. But, to help answer your question, the SR is a drop in. If theres anything you should concentrate on learning about it should be the wiring. I speak from experience. My first involvement, giving my bud a hand in his SR, we got the KA out and the SR in, in a couple of hours. Wiring was a tad of a mindblow being that I was quite unexperience then, and this was his first import project (He previously only worked on/liked musclecars till he found the fun of an agile, nimble, and best of all, fun imports.) so you could imagine that such major wiring was like alien technology for him. Luckily I had some experience dealng with KA harnesses and wiring, from servicing nissan pickups. The best advice I can give to make it as eay as possible would be to buy a front clip, so you could look at original locations and such. But this forum is the right place for advice and help. The veteran dudes know everything there is to kow right off the top of thier minds, its rather impressive. |

if you go for a whole front clip make sure you get the S13 silvia stuff on it too so you could either sell it or use it

Re: Re: So...how much does it cost to do it yourself?
there's a thread that pops up every couple weeks about how much a swap would be if you do it yourself. its common sense... an engine clip costs about 2500. that's all you need. then just swap it in.
if you want to make a sileighty go here

"and just swap it in" oh so simple....I asked what TOOLS, not "just swap it in" if I wanted that kind of a reply, I could've asked for Captain Obvious, but I got you instead... Turbo Thoughts: hey, that'd be really cool if we could do that, work on the cars in the summer, where are you located? I'd definitely be up for that, cuz I could learn a few more things as well...Alright, talk to you later ~Chris |
