Jay there is maybe some hints for you
I do my shoots with 35mm SLR Nikon N65 (all automatic with manual settings)
That's what I used:
daylight, cloudy sky
aperture F11, shutter speed 1/90 - 1/125
electic light, in room
aperture F22, shutter speed 1/10 - 1/6
Of course I use tripod and auto shutter release

I used f-stops of between 11 and 22, usually took each shot at a couple settings, but I left the shutter speed on auto. Could that be it?

Could it have to do with the type of lens on the camera?

I use semi-automatic mode (aperture set manually, shutter speed - by built-in exposure meter). Blurry pictures happen when you shake camera during shutter release. That's why tripod is a must. If you don't have tripod put camera on the table (chair, bookshelf)
and use "self-timer" feature or remote shutter release device (i.e. infrared)

awww.. trust me Jay, save up, and get a digi cam... it'll be your best investment dude

I wish i had a digi cam sooner, since there are a number of models which i helped other people built (which means I don't own currently), and I really wish i could have got "non-blury" pictures of them.. grrrrr

but it's all good now
