Question I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?

I have a 98 GP GT (3.8L 'K') that has a noise coming from under the hood. It increases and decreases with engine RPM's. It is a whining sound that is more noticable when the engine is cold. I've had three mechanics look at it. One says it's the normal noise made by the throttle body. The other two say it's the alternator and that the noise indicates it's going. I have a few friends that have the same car, just different years, and they all have the same noise with varying loudness. The older the car, the more noticable. Has anyone heard of a similar noise complaint about these cars? I'm hoping that it is the alternator, because it's an easy fix.

hey man i have a 98 gp gt, and i have the EXACT SAME THING, and i HATE It, its louder then my exhaust i put on (when its cold)!
i had someone that knows alot about gp's look at it and they said its either the alternator, or the water pump. get someone to hit the gas and you be under the hood, and you can pretty much see where its coming from. i wanna know more just incase i have to change it. but that'll hopefully help.

I think i know what you are talking about. I have a 2000 GT I just got with only 27K miles on it and I heard it once when I hit the gas in park. The engine was already warm, and it was just a high pitched whine for a second or two. Since I have very little miles on it I wouldn't imagine that there is a mechanical problem, though anything is possible. It also did it once while I was at a friends, whos father is practically a mechanic. He said its normal, so i shrugged it off. If it does it constantly then I would take it to the pontaic dealer and ask them about it, they should know the answer.

Could this just be the intake sucking in more air??

When under the hood and reving using the throttle cables does it sound like it's coming for the intake??

Nope

No whine here on '03 GP GT. The only sound I can hear is the exhaust (I love that sound )
Although I think since you mentioned this I'll listen closer on the way home from work. Also, it doesn't get very cold here in Mid-Florida.

It's hard to tell. The sound is definitely coming from on top of the engine. The sound seems to get louder as the car gets older. It wasn't as noticable 6 months ago.......

Yeppers, my 2001 GT has that whining noise. Definately more noticable when engine is cold. I may be imagining it but it seems to be more audible when I've used regular unleaded as opposed to mid-grade or premium. Just my 2-cents.

water pump

mine makes a noise like that but it's definitely the waterpump. my waterpump is on the way out. i had my radiator replaced recently and they said the water pump would have to go soon. i've noticed it leaking, and i have had to top of my radiator periodically. it's a pretty cheap fix but i just have to save up the money for it being a college student. while i'm at it i'm thinking about adding an underdrive pully to the water pump and an overdrive pully to the alternator to help the draw from the electric turbo and the new amp i should be getting for my b-day. the water pump is only around $38 at pepboys and each pully is $59 at zzperformence. it might be something to check into....

Talking

I have a GTP but I had a noise too. I thought that it was my supercharger needing an oil change but that didn't help. Just the other day I was looking at my engine while it was running not touching anything and out of nowhere one of my pulley just popped off! Aparently the bearing just froze and the pulley(plastic) melted off. After I replaced the "tension pulley", the engine was very quiet and sounded brand new. So I would check your tension pulleys, GTP has 2, and see how smooth they spin. Maybe this could help some of you.

I've got a '99 GP GT with the same problems

I've got '99 GT and the moment i drove it off the lot I heard the whining. I did a little detective work (being a mechanic and all) and found the power steering pump seemed to be the problem. So I called my old roommate from the tech school we went to, and asked him about this b/c he's working in a dealership and apprenticing with a guy with 25 some odd years and they both veriefed that they've been seeing the same probelm. The P/S pump has been causing some of the problems. The water pump is occassionally whining but he said to check the P/S pump first. The whining is normally aeration (air) in the pump, causing cavitation hense, the whine. I hear mine alot when it's cold in the morning, especially when turning/accelerating. Hope this helps some of y'all!!

Re: I hear this whine in many GP GT's...Is it normal?

Well, I've had some funky whining too, but I know what mine were. The first one was the tensioner pulley on my supercharger belt. The bearing locked up, the pulley broke, and it ruined the idler pulley. Had to replace them both. I know that isn't the problem in the GT's, though, cause hey, they ain't got superchargers. (Something the people at Advance didn't know, apparently.)

The other whining is my p/s pump. I took it to the dealership, they said I had a stuck valve. They flushed my p/s system, and it helped...for about a week. Mine is loudest when sitting at a redlight or stopsign with my foot on the brake. So...it's probably a new p/s pump for me.
