2000 impala emissions problem
Our Impala has approx 97500 miles. The "check engine soon" light has begun to appear momentary. The manual states that the vehicle is having an emissions issue and to bring the vehicle to a dealer. Is there any thing that I can check for first? Is this something the shop computer has to locate?

This vehicle will require a scanner to interface with the vehicle's system. I would suggent determining the cause that way, then go from there. Without codes, you will need th check the operation of everything involved, and hope for the best. Ray

If these sensors are OK then catalytic convertor problems are not all uncommon. Another simple and often overlooked cause is a loose fuel filler cap as the computer looks for positive pressure in the tank. If the fuel filler cap was the problem then it takes some time for the computer to reset this error code. Best advice was given in that you should have the control module scanned. That may cost some money, however in terms of saving time it's worth the money, also when you consider that electronic sensors can not be returned if they are not the problem, then the money spent scanning is extremely well spent. |

Re: 2000 impala emissions problem
I believe Autozone will hook your car up for free and retrive the code from the computer and tell you what it means.
Getting the code is the first thing to do that way you have some knowledge as to why the light is on. Mine came on for a bad A.I.R. Pump. They wanted $500 for the repair. On the forum I found a enough information that all it needed was a hole made in the cover of the pump to allow water to drain out. Light never came on again. You can even by an inexpensive code reader (not cheap by quality just number of features) for less then $50 plug it up under the dash where the connector is and do it yourself. It may be worth it as opposed to paying the same to a mechanic. All you need is the number of the code. You can look up the defination online. Then you'll have your own scanner / reader and it will work on just about any car built on or after 1996. |
