Does this sound shady to you?

Here's the deal; I posted an ad on ThePartsTrader.com for some stuff I had for sale. This is the response I got. I've done business over the 'net quite a bit in the past, but I'm a bit leery about this one. I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys (& gals!) about whether you think this is legit or not...

Here's a link to the original ad: parts trader ad

Good Day,
I am a reputable business man here in United kingdom(UK) ,i came across your adress on the web and i have interest in your item,so i want to know the least offer you could go for as per the item.just to let you know that i will handle the shipping myself here in UK because it is cheaper.
Regards.

Russ wrote:Which items are you referring to specifically? Or do you want them all? If you're willing to take care of the shipping then I'm sure I can lower the prices quite a bit on most of the items. However, on a few of the other items (the 96-99 Civic parts) I won't be able to lower the prices at all because I'm selling them for a friend.
Let me know & we'll go from there,
Russ

Thanks for the mail and the update.
I will like you to give me the least price of all so
i will start with the payment arrangement.
Get back to me as soon as possible.
Regards.

Ok, let's see... I've gone through the list & refigured the prices without the cost of shipping (what the lowest prices would be):

'98 Integra Type R rear springs - $40
'88-89 Civic/CRX headlight brackets - $15
'88-91 Civic/CRX factory upper rear wing - $30
'88-91 Civic/CRX intake manifold (bare) - $40
'88-95 D15 (SOHC, non-VTEC) valve cover - $45
'96-99 Civic EX AEM brake pads - $40
'96-99 Civic EX APC gauge cluster insert - $40

Total price for everything - $250 USD

The '88-89 Civic/CRX stock corner lights have been sold already. Those are the only items that I have sold from the original listing. If you're still interested let me know & we'll go from there.

Thanks a lot for the mail and the price is now okay by me so this is how we are going to seal this transaction There is an associate of mine in the US who is owing me $7,500 i am going to instruct him to send you a check for that amount, and when it clears your bank you can now send my balance by WESTERNUNION.The reason why i am doing this is that a check sent from over here in UK would take like 20days or more to clear whereas a check sent within the US would clear almost immediately check.Although i know that the value of the check is more than the price of the ITEM but i am willing to trust you with my balance So if this offer is acceptable to you,let me have your contact information so that i can instruct my associate to send you a check, that is your name, address and phone number Please get back to me as soon as soon as you get this mail so that i can know your decision.I am banking on my balance so that i will be able to sett le my shippers here in there local office because it is cheaper and faster. My regards to the family.
Regards.

Re: Does this sound shady to you?

I wasted 5 minutes of my life reading that just to say, yes. It sounds fishy. But take the check from the guy in the u.s. and cash it, then once it clears you can send the items.

Sounds like they're structuring transactions to make you the one that gets investigated by the IRS so they can A) Launder Money or B)Avoid taxes. Trust me if you western union that money the agent will file an S.A.R(suspicious activity report) and uncle sam will come knocking at your door, I do this kind of thing alot (not the money laundering part )

It is fishy!!

The same thing happened to a guy I work with when he listed his CRX on autotrader, he got some guy wanting him to accept a check from another guy and forward him the difference, just like is being done to you.

It's a method of money laundering, they use it so the money doesn't actually show as going from the source to them, you're the middle man as it were.

Thanks for all the info, because I definitely learned a couple things. To be honest, the whole money laundering thing never crossed my mind. The whole situation didn't sound right to me. I mean, the guy never asked about the condition of the parts, asked to see pics of them, or even expressed any interest in the parts themselves....

I think I'll be avoiding this situation

Do not under any circumstances give any of your bank details to this guy.Looks like a scam to access your bank account number, steal your details and run up debt on your account.

Re: Does this sound shady to you?

If you were to transfer through Western Union, wouldn't the money clear in one day regardless of what country it is going to?
