2000 Camry CE gas fill problem

I have a 2000 Camry CE 4 Cyl. About two weeks after we got the car (used 57K miles @ the time) it became almost impossible to put gas into it. After about .7 gallons you have to stop and wait for the gas to finish "gurgling" before you pump the next .7 gallons of gas into it. 20 minutes is an aweful long time to stand there and fill up a tank. We had it looked at by our mechanic when we had the timing belt replaced. He said that it was probably the safety float ball had gotten stuck and quoted us a min. of $150 to drop the tank and look and possibly the gas tank would have to be replaced. That didn't sound right to me so now I'm asking if anyone can shed some light on this issue. Any insight anyone can provide would be EXTREMELY appreciated.
Thank you,
Vincent

First try the basics.....

1) take the canister (fume return charcoal) return line off and blow through it with pressurized air.

2) with the same line off try to fill the car...is it better...etc...
3) there is a vent line to accomplish exactly this (help fill up normally)it may be pinched or clogged. going from the area where you put the gas nozzle down to the tank, inspect it, it is in the upper "neck" area.
Start there never mind some guy removing the tank before actually trying the basics he will eventually have to do JUSt what I said anyway to diagnose which part is causing the issue.
Good luck and if you have anymore?'s let me know.

Lightbulb Btw

IF he is correct (the guy who wishes to drop the tank)there is a fast and easy way to prove it......take a coat hanger to the gas station with you before you begin the fill up, slide it down the "neck" and try to pump gas ....is it any faster?
if it is, it needs repair .....if not .....do what I mentioned above and you will find the true culprit.
Enjoy!
