replacing balljoints?
ok my car is in piss pore shape the previous owner trashed the crap out of it. i was thinking that it might be a good measure to replace the balljoints, and i suspect them for my steering allignments not lasting a full tank of gas.
i've heard of people replacing balljoints themselves on this forum, and wanted to know if anyone could offer any help in telling me what tools i need.

you can always try a bfh, but i ran into serious problems with that method. i would see how much a shop would charge.

I would say the quickest easiest way is to go to a junkyard and pick up a sets of control arms with the ball joints on them for $20 it's cheaper and easier. Plus if you get new ball joints they will cost you $20 each. Save yourself some time and money! Plus the control arms should have better rubber then your control arms if the ball joints are shot.

ball joints aren't shot, least not all i don't think, shop charges around 100 per balljoint.

ok well if they are ok don't mess with them just get a wheel alignment is the car lowered? If you get a wheel alignment get 1/16th toe-in on the front. And 1/16th toe-out on the rear. That should takecare of things and it will handle like a dream.

Re: replacing balljoints?
Yes you could rent a press
Do not bother with junkyard control arms unless you 100% sure they are good. You may end up throwing more money due to the junkyard parts. |

Re: replacing balljoints?
It depends on which type of press it is, some are a pain in the ass to line everything up(you need like 5 hands) You can even do it with a large vice & socket. You could also bring your knuckles & UCA's to an autoparts store that will press them for a slight fee. If you purchase UCA, they come with new joints.
Oh yea, I have no idea how much a rental fee would be, our wall mount press/puller was $2,000 or something. |
