car help

Im not a know it all on cars, but i just got rid of a 2000 svt contour with a vortech supercharger on it. It was fast and way fun to drive, i loved it, but the reliability was terrible. I know that you sacrifice reliability with performance, but it seems like this was more so than normal.
Anyway, im looking for a new car. I want what I had in my contour, a lot of performance, reasonable reliability, good looks, and reasonable gas mileage (probobly not a muscle car). I cannot expect the world however, because my budget is about 8 grand, maybe 5 grand for the car and a few grand in mods too. Is it true that all that matters in going fast is horsepower to weight ratio? Also, maybe a torquey little four banger with a little turbo, maybe a motor swap in a small car.
One of my ideas is a miata. I know they are girly, but they are light as hell, a six speed sometimes, and rear wheel drive. Anybody know if a motorswap is possible in one of these things?
THANKS FOR ANY ANSWERS OR REPLYS!

Miatas aren't girly. They're pretty stout machines with a TON of aftermarket support and their own spec racing class in the SCCA. You can buy them on the cheap and make them corner like crazy. Plus they're the ubiquitous autocross car due to their inexpense and nimble chassis.

And if you're really interested in engine swaps, well... Here you go.

Ford 5.0L V8 into Miata
