Strange Noise from Underneath when accellerating

My car a 2000 Z24 makes a grinding noise that comes from the middle of the car underneath when you accelerate and are under powered, if I accelerate hard then no noise, the noise is also only heard in 1st and a little in second.

The mechanic first tightened the heat shields and that cut down on some of the noise, then I was told that it might be something loose in my catalytic converter.

Any thoughts,

I had the same problem in my 2003 S10 5 Speed. Car dealership refused to do anything about it. So, I said the hell with it and traded it in. Just the noise I was hearing was rather loud and people were asking me if I knew about it on the road. I just dumped the problem off on another dealership. Best thing I can tell you to do is to go to another dealer and see if they have any ideas as well as long as it is still under man. war.

I have the same problem with my 2001 Cavalier.

GM's soloution to it was to change the oil in the transmission to a heavier viscosity and then to advise me to "change gears at a diffrent RPM". My car was doing it so loud you could hear it bouncing off the houses back to me if the windows were open in the summer.

This was, word for word, GM's advisory to its service depots as of 8/1/01:

"There is no correction for the rattle noise. advise the customer to raise the engine speed between gearshift, this will reduce the rattle noise level".

This was, again I must stress, after they changed the oil.

I was told by someone independantly that it sounds 'a lot like a bearing dancing around on something''.

GM put me off untill the warranty expired without solving the problem.

Sell it dude.

It is a throw out bearing BTW!!!! Or more than likely is. Best option is to get rid of it. I put 15,000 miles on it like than and then passed it off to another dealership. Oh and guess what it is still sitting there in the shop not fixed to put on the lot for sale yet because that "non detramental problem" That I had...GM has to know that it is something wrong otherwise they wouldn't still have my truck in shop today...I have now owned my new car for almost a month. If that gives you a time frame that it has been in the shop.......
