Quick Question About HICAS

Is this true. If it is I am going to start looking for this.
I was wondering about HICAS. Does anyone know what it stands for and what exactly the super HICAS system looks like? Exacly what causes the car to be able to turn more. And at what speed does the car make the decision to change from high, med, low.

it has a LSD, ABS, and 4ws. It was sort of the performance or sport package for the DOHC s13. if you can get under the car it will be very easy to spot as you will see a steering control arms in the back going to the wheels. Also the lsd should have a little rectangle orange sticker on the drivers side is where I see em on J30's.

My 91 240sx SE has Hicas. It is etched on the sides of the car (Super Hicas). If you look under the car, the rear steering rack sticks out like a sore thumb. I like the hicas feature.

how does it drive? ever driven a non hicas s13?

Have you ever gotten sideways with it and felt the rear wheels turn lol?

also it might ride better because stock it also has the VLSD, something which none of the other S13's had stock.

Do you think it follows lines around turns better then a 2ws car while your say grip racing, not drifting....

I've have some videos of a guy with a red s13 hicas car. Its a sohc I believe and just has some I/H/E mods for power and some suspension work. nothing really special, but its good footage hes racing with other cars close to him and they are lap long videos in car. It looked like a pretty good handling car and was keeping up with GT 4.6's a few older BMW's were around him, as well as a S14 in one lap. Pretty good footage.

With the Hicas it seems to handle very well (at least better than my Ford Escort). I have never driven a non-Hicas s13 so, I can't compare it to another 240. If I'm going around a turn at a good speed I almost get a drifting affect but at the same time the car corners better than any 2wd I have ever driven.

Re: Re: Quick Question About HICAS

hicas sucks

its unpredictable, because, i believe i have said this in another thread, it has only 3 speed variables, low, high, and mid

so all of a sudden on the freeway, u start going sideways, its actusally kinna cool because u can see the rear wheels turning, and u can make smaller u-turns than non hicas, but still, its unpredictable and remmeber, you are NOT IN CONTROL of the rear wheels, its all automatic, which sucks

as for grip racing and drifting,,,, a NO NO once agian, it turns another way when you dont want it to,. and how can you drift when the rear wheels are being turned to either straighten u out, then u go 2mph slower and they are kicking u out to turn??

too unpredictable for me,,, flame suit is on... and that is my OPINNION!

have you ever driven a car with HICAS?
there are not three modes that HICAS can be in.
it is not unpredictable.
you don't start going sideways on the freeway.
you can't make smaller u-turns, it doesn't work at that low of a speed
would you want to be in control of the rear wheels? what, with two steering wheels? now THAT would suck
less grip for racing? are you kidding?
HICAS is not for drifting.
dude, you have no idea what you are talking about.

i've never driven a HICAS car, but from what i've heard from owners, it is harder to drift with. but, nevertheless, there were at least 2 with HICAS in the drift competition last month. i personally wouldn't buy it because i don't see myself needing it, unless i find a cheap car with it in which case i'll get one of the HICAS disabler bar things. i just don't really see that much of a use on it, and even if you can drift with it, i'd still rather be safe then sorry and have a regular 240SX.

btw, i'm pretty sure all Canadian 240's came with LSD's. we win!

i can't remember what it stands for either. i heard it a while ago...and now it's just gone. the S is probably steering...and i think the H was hyper or high or something...i dunno. like i said, i can't remember.

everyone who thinks 240sx HICAS is so bad- go read some articles about skyline HICAS (which is the exact same system). instead of getting knocked, it gets praised.

http://www.automotivearticles.com/in...issan/gt-r.htm
http://autozine.kyul.net/technical_s...tion_other.htm
http://lumis.gamesweb.sk/Auta/images/nissan/skyline.pdf
http://history.jbskyline.net/index4.php

(now i know there are probly some random sites out there that say its bad, but the majority say that its good. you don't need to post any sites that knock skyline hicas)

everyone is bias against it because one profesional racer somewhere said he didn't like it. after that, everyone repeated it.

no, everyone is biased cause everyone who has it doesnt need it for what they use their car for. if ur trying to drift on a right hand turn, and suddenly ur rear wheels turn 2 degrees to the LEFT (yes they go opposite so that ur turning radius is smaller) then the back end wont swing/slide out the same way, instead, the whole car will move forward in one continuos line (not a drift line) and then u will lose drift speed and stability thru ur drift cause the rear wheels hook and give some better turning grip, whereas without hicas, u would have better a drift slide cause the wheels are moving sideways at the exact same angle as the car. .

the z32 has hicas aswell, and i believe it operates at 50mph or over. making high speed turns more predictable and stable. hicas on a huge turn will actually decrease chances of the car rolling over when entering a turn toofast. the wheels angle outward just to give the rear of the car a better sense of where its gotta go in order for the car to stay planted on the pavement. it gives the rear of the car a wider turning line, in order to compensate for the front of the car entering the turn first (which is the case, ALL THE TIME, in ANY car). this adds just a touch of grip to the car, and it makes big difference in these situations. but in drift, u can experience some mad wheel hop.

s13,
and i'm saying that even the HICAS owners themselves are bias because of what other people say.

ralph,
i agree with you 100% on the hicas not being for drifting. not everyone who has a 240 bought it to drift with. i said in my previous post that hicas is not for drifting. i know first hand.
there is a hicas fuse, i've been meaning to pull it out and see if i can drift then, but i haven't gotten to it yet.
and yes, your turning radius is smaller, but it doens't make your u-turns have a smaller turning radius, as it is only active above a certain speed (i can't remember exactly). thats why i made that comment.
also, the rear wheels only turn 1 degree, not 2.

steath,
everything you say is not true. its a fact that super hicas doesn't have 3 modes. it has more grip when road racing, and it is not unpredictable. take it from me, i own one!

So in observing all thats going on in this thread, it seems that hicas has advantages and disdvantages depending on driving style. Is there any way to temp. disable hicas? Assuming the last person that replied on this thread was in plans of removing a set of wires to disable it. If there are such wires, also assuming its electronically controlled by the way everyone talks about it (not familiar with the full spec of the system). Where would you find it on a 98 240sx SE?
