runs 5 seconds then shuts down???

HELP,

1997 Grand Prix GTP 112,000 miles.

Intermittent problem....Car starts normally runs 5 seconds then shuts down. After 15 to 20 attempts it will stay running.....and problem won't reaccure for a week or so.

No code is displayed and it doesn't matter if the car is cold or hot.

I've tried using different keys (thinking it might be associated with the alarm system), starting car in Neutral, replaced fuel pump relays #14 & 15. This problem is growing more frequent and I really need some direction.

Thanks in advance

Check your fuel pressure. Check for a loose or corroded connection on the battery and aux. terminal. That's about all I can think of right now. Good Luck

Update,

After $42 and a half hour of my time, unfortuntally the fuel pump resistor did not fix the problem. After reading about all the difficulty people have had with these, I felt very confident it would cure my problem.

Next step it still to be determined!!!

Any ace troubleshooters out there??

New Keys?

You're not using a new set of keys by chance, are you? I had a new set of keys made for mine and the built-in security forced my 2000 GTP to shut down after about 5 seconds of running. Just an outside shot at the problem...hope this helps!

Update,

Fuel pressure is good, no check engine light (Code) and different keys have been tried, none new.

I really am beginning to think it is something tied in with the security system. Does anyone know the components involved in detecting a theft and their function in shutting off either the spark or fuel supply???

Are there any good websites out there that give detailed schematic diagrams for the 97 GTP?? I've got my service manual on order, but I need to get this think fixxed ASAP!!

I know there has to be an ace ASE Troubleshooter out there......where are you!!!

My 2000 GTP has a manual shutoff via a keycode series (I believe) for the security system. Not sure if it would be the same as the '97 or not. I'll post it if you'd like to try shutting off anti-theft to see if that's the problem. Just let me know...

If it is indeed a security problem your light will always be on or flashing when trying to start. After it starts for a few seconds then stall, it should not start at all until you leave it sit for about 20 minutes.

HELP car starts for 5 seconds then shuts down???

I'm in the same situation. My 97 GTP has been in my garage for two weeks. My car has 103,000. I drove it 2 Sundays ago and went to leave someones house and the engine turned over ran for 5 secs then shut down.

I went and bought a new fuel filter $13.26, new fuel Pump $302.83 I installed both of them over this passed weekend the problems still not fixed... Last night I checked the fuel pump relay and the INJ fuse no problems there. Did you remove your air box cover and try and spray carb cleaner in there??? That will at least let you know if it's indeed a fuel problem.. You should start your car and have someone spray carb cleaner in there, don't give it any gas see if your car stays running. If thats the case then you have computer problem or a crank sensor problem. If you fix your car please give me some hints to fix mine I'm in a bine right now I can't afford to pay someone $$$$$ to fix mine.

ANY suggestions please email me @ [email protected]
Thanks RL

Ain't it a bitch!!! Don't waste your money on a fuel pump resistor either. I think I may be closing in on a fix. I picked up a crank sensor today and will be installing it tomorrow.....I'll let you know about the outcome. Also, I've gotten some info about another possible cause. It's called a Body Control Module (BCM). It's located under the driver's side dash, just to the left of the E-brake. It's the box that gives you your chime. It's tied in with the alarm system. I'm waiting on the outcome of another person's exact problem as ours. He is going to e-mail me the results of his car after the installation. More info on this can be found at: www.indycgp.com under the "General" catagory.

I'll keep you udated on my situation, if you would please do the same for me.
