Question '91 Engine Reliability, comparing 4cyl with V6

I am looking at used Camry's. Typically, 91 models, either 4cyl or V6.

Are the 6's enough peppier and smoother for general commuting to justify the additional maintenance and repair costs?

Are there any major issues with either engine?

Thanks,
- CarlD [email protected]

I have an 88 Camry V6 and a 90 Camry 4 cyl. The V6 has more power and more problems IMO. My 4 Cyl runs great and I get 30+ MPG on the open road which is really cool after the 4Runner I used to have (12MPG).

Re: '91 Engine Reliability, comparing 4cyl with V6

Hey, i got a 91 camry LE 4 cyl... i would totally recommend it over the sixers, the 4 cyl's got adequate power, no engine problems for me and i've had the car for 12 yrs now. Oil change every so often, 1 change in timing belt and spark plug cleaner, carbon cleaner in the gas tank once every 3 months. I also bought a a 03 corolla, and when i went to the dealership they wanted to buy my camry because the engine was still brand new.

Honestly, regarding my V6; I've been lucky yet spoiled in a way.

My V6 is a 5-speed, so that does make a difference compared to a V6 auto. The only problem I ever had was the piston rings, but then again that was my fault....I admit it..

Other than that, it runs really well......

My I4 does have a good engine. I've never had any problems with it at all. The automatic tranny sucks though. Undecided on how I want to handle that issue right now. Leaning towards converting it to manual.

Hope this insight was a bit more useful than my last post. At the time, I was pissed off at the I4...hehehehehe....
