1991 525i Oxygen Sensor Replacement

I need to replace the O2 sensor on my car and I have run into a snag. I need to disconnect the old sensor which is located just in front of the catalytic converter. I have a socket that I borrowed from my friend that should work for this application (has the groove cut out for the cable.) Unfortunately when I try to get the socket over the sensor, there is not enough room to get it on there. The heat shield does not allow enough clearance. I looked in my Chilton's service manual, but it does not give instructions on removal. Does anyone know if there is a special socket for this car, or do I need to drop the exhaust to remove the sensor? Thanks for the help.

Use a wrench

Yep, a boxed end wrench that is the same size as the socket.

Later,
