fyi keyless entry instructions

I bought a keyless remote off ebay for my 99 toyota 4runner limited. I didn't see any alarm box under the driver seat so I followed some simple re-programming instructions I found on the web, and it worked! You have to follows these steps exactly. It may not work on all models.

open drivers side door and get in your vehicle.
put key completely into ignition, then pull out.
with door open, lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).
close door then open door.
lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).
put key completely into ignition then turn to the on position then pull key out.
you will now hear the door locks lock then unlock a couple of times.
now quickly press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time only for about a second.
then quickly press the unlock button for just a second.
after you do this you should hear a beep then your lights will flash. This will indicate that your remote is programmed to your vehicle. Now you will be able to open the rear window as well. I had to try this about 3 times to get it right, but it will save you a bunch of money. A dealership will charge you $50 or more dollars. Some will tell you your used remote isn't compatable with your car when it really is and charge you hundreds for a new one.

Good Luck!

Unhappy keyless entry/alarm disarming problem

My kids left interior light and my battery died, I have charged battery but when I hook it back up my alarm goes off. I have keyless entry/alarm remote but the battery in it is to weak to disarm system. I disconnected battery and I am stranded, nearest dealer is 50miles from house. Can anyone help? Thank you

Re: fyi keyless entry instructions

If its an aftermarket alarm, then there should be a wire connected to the battery or fusebox giving it power. Disconnect that wire. If its a factory alarm, find the alarm fuse and pull it.

Re: fyi keyless entry instructions

I bought a remote off ebay. Cant get it to work for the life of me!! Ive searched and searched for the instructions.

I Finally went to the dealer and they said that my 98 4Runner Limited DOES NOT have Keyless entry... i mean, WTF! a freaking 4Runner Limited doesnt have what my Subaru Legacy L has???

Please tell me they are wrong, and where I can find the "brain" of the system to prove it.

Talking Revision to programming directions...

Thanks roadrashjohnny!!!

I have a 1999 4Runner and I followed the directions above (which I've copied below) with one exception. In step 8 -- I held the lock button instead of the unlock button in order for the directions to work.

Step 1 - open drivers side door and get in your vehicle.

Step 2 - put key completely into ignition, then pull out.

Step 3- with door open, lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 4 - close door then open door.

Step 5 - lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 6 - put key completely into ignition then turn to the on position then pull key out (you will now hear the door locks lock then unlock a couple of times)

Step 7 - now quickly press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time only for about a second.

Step 8 - then quickly press the lock button for just a second.

Step 9 - exit car and close the door

After you do this you should hear a beep then your lights will flash. This will indicate that your remote is programmed to your vehicle.

Re: fyi keyless entry instructions

The 98 4Runner uses a GRAY RS3000 remote. This was a dealer or port installed system. They did not have factory remotes until 1999. It will use a DIFFERENT programming procedure.

The 1999 model either uses the GRAY remote as specified above, or if it has the FACTORY remote system, it would use the HYQ1512Y unit, with the power window button.

Re: fyi keyless entry instructions

FYI, this is what worked for my '01 4Runner

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

Taken from NoliWan at toyota-4runner.org

The big difference is you turn to on during step 4 twice, as opposed to once.
