2004 S2000 Improvements

Just read this article in Popular Mechanics, I copied it from the mag.

"Originally introduced in 2000, the S2000 is being revamped for the '04 model year with a number of minor mechanical improvements and several interior and exterior styling changes. The interior changes include improved shoulder room. and accommodation for satellite radio. Exterior changes include high intensity discharge low beams and LED taillights in revised housings. Tires are larger: P215/45R17 front and P245/40R17 in the rear. The transmission has substantially improved shift feel, thanks to single carbon fiber synchronizer rings replacing dual brass synchros. The most profound change is in the increased displacement of the engine, from 2 liters to 2.2. The peaky engine has always thrived on revs, with hurried forward locomotion requiring the tachometer to stay in the narrow power band between the VTEC cam profile cut in at 6000 and the rev limiter at 9000 rpm. Increased displacement adds no more to the engines 240hp, but does bump up the peak torque from 153 Ft.-lbs at 7500rpm to 161 Ft.-lbs at 6500rpm. If that doesn't sound like much, it's not-particularly down in the arc of the tachometer where a car is driven most of the time. On the street, a simple passing maneuver requires downshifting. On the racetrack however its a different story. Revised suspension settings make the car far more stable and easy to control in a full 4 wheel drift, as we found out during an extensive testing session at Spring Mountain Motorsports."

I drove one yesterday. The transmission definately shifts smoother, and reverse is right there now. The difference in torque isn't spectacular but is definately there. The interior is a bit more comfortable for a larger person like myself, most notably with the top up. One of my favorite things is the new wheels, they really hit a good match for the car.

Where did you get to drive one?

The dealership I work at just got it's first one in. We drew straws to see who got to take it for it's test drive and I won.

I drove one a couple of syas ago, I've got an 01 and I like mine better, I don't like what the car does up on the upper end of the power band, the old car is more explosive from 6K than the new one, stock suspension is better and the bigger tire benefits it, more stable at rear than the old car.
Wimpy clutch, just soft, feels like an accord clutch.

Inside looks nice, aluminum throughout gives it a nice look but the old tach looks better.

Overall I like the old car better.
