BANJUL (Reuters) - A 28-year-old man accused of stealing a man's penis through sorcery was beaten to death in the West African country of Gambia on Thursday, police said.

A police spokesman told Reuters that Baba Jallow was killed by about 10 people in the town of Serekunda, nine miles from the capital Banjul.

Reports of penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, with purported victims claiming that alleged sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear in order to extort cash in the promise of a cure.

The police spokesman said many men in Serekunda were now afraid to shake hands, and he urged people not to believe reports of "vanishing" genitals. Belief in sorcery is widespread in West Africa.

Seven alleged penis snatchers were beaten to death by angry mobs in Ghana in 1997.

Where?

Most of those countries don't have the infrastructure to support a school system, the schools that are there are set up my missionary associations and the like and are few and far between.

that still doesn't defer from my first point. They need to go to school thus schools need to be built. It doesn't take a genius to work that one out but it does take a politician to use it against you.

You don't quite grasp the concept.

Schools won't be built, any money the government gets goes on self-indulgent spending.

Visit the continent before passing your judgement, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on once you have visited there.

Wait, let me draw you a picture.
In South Africa, schools in lower income areas are vandalised and destroyed. The buildings are literally stolen, the pipes get stolen for scrap materials value, the roofing materials get stolen for use elsewhere, what isn't stolen gets burnt whenever the students are unhappy with the school system.
This isn't exaggeration, it is reality, the reality YOU don't see living in Brighton enjoying your first world life.

as bizarre as it seems.... hell i could see what they're talking about with the beliefs of the old world holding fast and staying while the beliefs of the new world aren't put to good use. in a 3rd world country where the educational institutions are either in horrible condition or non-existant, people will turn to religions and beliefs that don't quite exactly make sense in the eyes of a person from a 1st world power....i remember my grandma telling me of stories that in haiti, people would believe in the living dead such as in the case of zombies walking the streets naked and terrorizing people.....so in a sense if it's an old belief, and the people hold on to that belief strong enough, it will happen to them. so therefore, although on the bizarre side, it does make sense to a degree.
