Question 97 firebird turbo or super?

Ok straight to the point. I have a 97 black firebird v6 5 speed....first Should I swap for a 5.7 v8, would I be able to do that fairly well without having to replace lots of parts also big question. Should I super charge or turbo and if I do either to the v6 or v8 what shoudl I plan on having to replace to get them in.

if you put a turbo or super you always have to compensate for something else. especially air flow. you may want to get a typhoon intake to increase air in, and a better exhaust to get that air out.

If there's any question in your mind, just swap out the V6 for a V8, that would be an LT1 in your case. You should just need $1500 or less to find a good donor LT1/tranny and then you just need to pay to have it installed, unless you're doing it on your own. As for a super or a turbo, I don't know that I would car one way or another. If I was looking for the extra hp, I'd just see which made more hp per dollar, and then go with that...

old thread but just in case it's still up for debate...

Supercharging or Turbo? That's a big question and it always depends on what exactly you want from the car. Do you want insane 1/4 times? All around drivabillity? Dyno queen? Highway warrior?

Supercharging leaves you will most of your power low in the RPM band...which makes for a great racer from a dig and would best be suited for 1/4's. High PSI S/C'ed cars typically are monsters off the line and have worlds of torque but it fades off really sharp up top...leaving only the engine's natural power to keep things going.

Turbocharging is more complicated. In most cases you'd look to twin turbo the engine. A small T3 off either bank would be great for either the V6 or V8 and yield interesting results. Turbos, though, require large volumes of exhaust gas to spool propperly...which means high RPM. A turbo'd car wouldn't be the greatest from a dig...it'd be the opposite of the S/C'ed car...from the line, the engine's natural power would be all that's moving the car until the compressors spool.

A sequential twin-turbo setup would be feasable...yet oh so difficult...and would help with off the line power. A sequential turbo setup spools one turbo prematurely, giving you some boost off the line...one of the reasons TT RX-7's and Supras make decent 1/4 mile cars. Later on the other turbo spools to start really cramming the air into the intake. Problem with this is that the exhaust would all have to be collected into a single manifold or header...which would require lots of plumbing.

A 350 with something like a single BBT88 plumbed into it, though, would own all. You'd lag to hell...you'd NOT run any faster in the 1/4 than stock...but you'd be able to put anything to shame on the highway.

Re: 97 firebird turbo or super?

well iwould definately go with a nice ls1 with a nice 6 spd tranny and instead of getting turbo or supercharger why dont you tighten up your car and try to put the stock h.p to the ground polyurathane bushings all around nice stiff coilovers and definately some nice street slicks and you gotta stop so i would suggest getting some brembo/willwood four piston calipers all around as big a rotor as you could fit some sick wheels with lots of lip then that charger would be heavenly.......
