coolant fan, NOT the ordinary problem
I have a 97 neon that has a problem with the fans not coming on at all. The fans are both good, and there is no break or open in the wiring. There is no relay like the haynes or chiltons both say it should. From all i can tell, it runs directly into the computer.
I have a computer scan tool and it doesn't give me any errors at all. Lately, I've hardwired the driver side fan to at least keep my engine somewhat cool. please help thanks in advance. CyBeR_LoRd |

I don't know the answer to your problem, but I too have been having cooling fan problems.
Here is my problem: When I am inside the car and have the a/c or heat setting to defrost or a combination of defrost and another setting I hear a hissing/vaccuum suction like noise. The coincidence is that everytime the car hisses, both cooling fans mounted to radiator turn on. When the hissing stops, so do the fans. The hissing noise and fans go on and off in approximately 3 second intervals. Therefore, my cooling fans are constantly going on and off every few seconds and I hear a hissing noise inside the car at the same time! It can't be the charging system because I just had a new alternator installed and checked. Obviously there is something wrong. Any suggestions? |

Re: Re: coolant fan, NOT the ordinary problem
Thats the thing, I think the switch is in the computer, because both fans work when direct wired to the battery. (fused and on only when the car is on) I've givin up on it for now. Running both fans all the time has kept the motor colder than I think they ever were on the sensor. I've still got a couple weeks before my schedule will allow me to have a couple more big projects. I'll be able to look more into it then.

Re: coolant fan, NOT the ordinary problem
I think Chrysler uses a electronic relay for the fans. Try looking underneath on the drivers side on the left frame rail in front of the tire area.

Re: Re: coolant fan, NOT the ordinary problem
The chiltons and the haynes books both say there is a relay, but mine never has had one. The socket for the relay has no terminals or wires going to it. I have yet to trace the wires from the fan.
