adding an amp and sub
I don't know much about wiring a car stereo and I have a question you could maybe help me with. I have a 2002 firebird with 10 speaker monsoon stereo, all factory equipment. I want to add subs into the hatchback with the boss amp. Can I just splice into the wiring of one of the rear speakers, add a speaker-line level converter, and then connect that to the amp to power the subs? Or do I need to add the converter closer to the head unit via factory wiring harness? If I did it the first way mentioned will that be sufficient for sending the signal to the amp as well as the factory speaker I am splicing from?
Hope you can help, or at least point me in some direction. Chris |

I have all seperate wiring. I have the sub, amp, and capacitor all in the rear. I just think I get better sound that way. i have a seperate amp and wiring for my indash unit to my component speakers. it sounds like a frickin theater. it's pretty awesome.

by component speakers do you mean the tweeters, crossover, and subs set? I had one of those but figured why would I need those little subs if I already have two twelves, which is plenty bass I thought. WHat u think

I've been reading as much as I can to get familiar with my car and the way it is wired. From what I've been able to find out, I think the factory monsoon head unit only powers the tweeters in the doors. Everything else is powered by a separate amp that pontiac has installed. If this is true, where is that amp and does it have line level inputs that I can do a "Y" adaptor off of?
Do you still have the factory head unit or is it an aftermarket with preamp outs? Thanks, Chris |

you most likely will have to buy a wiring kit for your new amp and sub which should only cost around 80 bucks or less canadian
that will power your sub and amp properly and sufficiently because if you tryed to splice power off your stock amps if you even have them it will be crap or it wont work as for your deck there probly wont be extra pre amp out puts on it so you may need to get a sterio shop to wire it all up for you |

component speakers give you the best sound. it includes what you said.
and Pontiac claiming there is 500 watts with that Monsoon is full of shit. rip that system out of there and put something else in. i advise a polk component system. about $200, but less than that if you shop around. if you know your stuff with stereo, you can tweak that Monsoon system to 500 watts. but it may be best to get something different. i'm all about grabbing someone's attention by shaking the building they are in!

Thanks guys, but I'm not looking to win any competition for the biggest and best stereo in town. I just want to add a sub and amp that I have sitting in my basement doing nothing. I got it out of my old cavalier.
Chris So does anyone know where the factory installed amp is located? |

should be with your in dash unit.
and none of the mentions i made were competition. they just make things sound better. and they aren't too bad a price. you can get subs, but if they suck, what's the point of putting them in. cruisin down the road with a bad system blaring? very uncool (if that's what you are going for) if you wanted to go competition, you could chuck out some money there buddy!! woohoo! |

Re: adding an amp and sub
Hey Guys,
In my 97 firehawk, 10 Speakers Monsoon, I installed a new Pioneer head unit and the problem I run into is two Front Speakers work great but the rest (8) barely making noise, I found the stock Amp, 32 wires connector going in and out of it, I want to add Amps,Subs and new Speakers into this. Any help would be greatly Appreciated Mai ** |

Re: adding an amp and sub
ok to answere your question yes you can get a line converter and convert your positive and negative signals into an rca chord then connect that to your amp, i have been doing this for 5 years with no problems. also you can use your power antenna as a remote wire so that the amp comes on when the car stereo is turned on. you will need to run your own power and ground wires.
if you havn't picked out a sub yet check out the stealth boxes. i have one and it is designed to push hard and loud. my one 10 inch sub is considered louder by most people than alot of other peoples dual 12's in other cars, and i only have 100 wats going to it

see this for more info http://mods.firebirdv6.com/stereo.html#FBAQ_14 The amp is located in front of the spare tire above the wheel well. It is mounted to a plastic plate and is on the fender side of the plate |
