Question loose heat shield

My 95 (3.2, 5sp man) was making a LOUD rattling or knocking when idling low or after shifting into R, 1 or 2. Found what I assume is a heat shield that bolts to the rear flange of the catalytic converter and then extends toward the rear and just rests on the pipe. It's very thin and bounces up and down producing the obnoxious sound. There's two ridges on the pipe where the rear of the shield rests, maybe was a weld or cushion at one point. My question is, was this a weld, and can I just take some muffler mend or something to attach this shield back to the pipe? Hope so, the sound's been driving me nuts! Thanks

loose heat shield

I'm having the same trouble on my 1997 Rodeo. Since no one has replied to you about this I'm going to go ahead and stick it together somehow. I'll let you know the results.
