need some help.

has anyone ever changed the alternator on there 240? i'm used to v8's in 70s muscle cars and i've never seen a part this ridiculously cramped. is there any advice anyone can give as to how to do this without liftin the engine or some crazy shit. i can barely touch the thing, let alone get any tool near it to remove it.

when we replaced it in my friends 240, it was a bitch to get to. We couldn't get anywhere near it from above like you said. We had to remove the engine undercover and pull it from below. your also going to need to remove the lower cooling fan shroud to get to a couple of the bolts to remove the alternator. If you have access to a lift or can rent one for a couple hours, I would recommend doing that. It is a PITA laying on the ground under the car trying to get this thing off. If I ever have to replace the alternator again, I will definately go to the base and use the lift.

Re: need some help.

yeah it was definately harder getting it back on. It's easier if you have somebody else to help you hold it in place while you put the first bolt in. Once you get the first bolt or 2 in though, then it's just a matter of figuring out how to get your arm in those hard to reach places to put the other bolts back in. good luck
