I recently bought a 98` Honda Civic Ex but I'm not sure it has Vtech. A friend who owns the same car said his says "Vtech" under the hood but mine doesn't. How else can you tell if your Honda has Vtech. I'm even wondering if it is even the original motor (assuming all Civics of that model have Vtech)????

First off, it's VTEC, V-Tech is a cordless phone company.
![]() All 6th gen ('96-'00) EX model Civics come with the D16Y8 SOHC VTEC engine. The HX models came with what's called E-VTEC which is an economy type of VTEC, but not the true type that the EX has. If your friend has the same car, his shouldn't say it on the valve cover as none of the 6th gen SOHC motors say it on them. You just know it by looking at the engine code which is stamped to the lower left side of the block, on your's you'll see it say "D16Y8." Hope that helps you out some.
