Winter Driving

Does anyone drive their vr4 during the winter time where there is snow? Is it possible or not recommended? The aws should make it easier. I live in northern mn where there is lots of snow and just curious. Thanks.

This is just me, but I hate AWD cars in the snow. I prefer RWD because I like my power wheels seperate from my stearing wheels.

That being said if you drive it in winter go slow around corners and get some snow tires. AWS will not help you at all. Its designed for high speed stability, not low speed cornering. Also remember that a car with AWD and ABS accelerates in snow/ice a lot faster than it can stop.

I’ve driven my 94 in the snow and it accelerates and handles pretty darn well with the Cooper Vipers I have on. They are a firm enough tire to get decent traction in the summer and good traction in the snow. The problem is that the tires are so wide, that you need a lot of space to stop the car.

The AWD with the limited slip will get the car going and in a straight line with now problem. Its that damn braking that becomes an issue. Fortunately I rarely have to drive it in the winter. My Shadow is my winter car or I take the wife’s Accord, but on occasion neither are available so I take out the 94 (the Delorean and 95 Spyder stay stored away).

You’d be surprised as to whats out there in the D. There are two gold plated ones, lots of reds, sharp looking black ones and a few blues. Mines still stock, but there are a lot of painted ones out there.

Have any of you guys driven the SL fwd in the snow. How do those handle? Is it doable or should I just avoid it altogether. My nissan 240sx is bad in snow and I wouldn't take it over 30 in any sort of snowy condition.

I would think it depend on the tires you have on it. If you have some soft z-rated tires designed to stick to the road, then you're going to slide all over the place. If you have some all seasons, you'll be in better shape and snow tires would be the best.

Like most people, you probably don't want to drive it in the winter if possible, but if you do, get some good snow tires - you won't be racing anyone in snow/ice anyway.

nearly ever car is capable of being driven in the snow. whatever you want to attempt is up to you in my humble oppinion this is an area that economical american cars are good at bad weather. more so the fwd american cars. but with the awd like the question is about with the right tires and a soft right foot and light steering you should not have a problem. as for breaking dont drive fast and break early.
