Question EGR or ECM Problem?

I ran a diagnostic on a check engine light and it gave me a code 32 which is an EGR or ECM problem. How do I know which one is giving me problems? Also could one of these problems relate to my last post about the truck losing all power when I use my turn signals? BTW its an 89' Silverado with the 350.

Re: EGR or ECM Problem?

Code 32 is usually caused by the valve or solenoid.
Check the passages by pulling up on the EGR diaphram (becareful its HOT) while the engine is running. If the engine stumbles and almost stalls the passages are good.

I have still been trying to diagnose an electrical isssue, so here is what I possibly could have narrowed it down to. Yesterday it died on me again as soon as I used my left turn signal, complete power loss. I coast into the driveway. Its dark by this time so when i open the door, no door light comes on. The truck has absolutely no power, as if the battery is dead. I pop the hood and just barely touch the positive starter wire and the door light comes on and the truck has all the power back. So I'm guessing part of my dying problem could be due to the positive starter cable? I noticed about 10inches from the positive battery post, the starter wire looks like it has possibly been burned a little with a part showing bare wires and even may have been spliced together. Thanks for any help.....

Re: EGR or ECM Problem?

Replace the cable. That should solve that problem.
As far as the EGR..if the engine stumbles I would go with a valve and solenoid.

GMMerlin,

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to replace the EGR Valve, I can almost guarantee its the EGR Valve with all the symtoms its giving me. What brand should I look at getting & is there anything I should know before replacing it?

Re: EGR or ECM Problem?

I would recommend using a GM valve and solenoid.
I have experianced too many problems with aftermarket valves.
There is a part number on the valve, you will need that to get the correct GM replacement.
