Custom exhaust and cold air intake

I was recently given an 88' Honda Civic DX (5 speed, 1.5L, ...). One of the few things wrong with it is a totally rusted muffler. I figure if I'm going to replace the muffler I might as well give fab'ing a custom cat back exhaust a shot! So my question is... what is the best type of muffler that is cheap and quiet. I want the cheapest, quietest muffler I can find. Any links to suppliers for mufflers and other exhaust parts (tubing ...)?

Also do you have any suggestions on what to make the intake out of (aluminum, pvc...). I am thinking pvc because its easily obtainable and easy to work with... also what type of filter? Should I just use some generic cone filter? (car is not k&n worthy! lol)

This car is just going to be a daily driver... I want it to be quiet and not have that trademark dying cat sound coming from the exhaust... Also im just doing the cold air intake to build up my skills before I do it for real on my real car!

Whatever you do, dont use PVC anywhere. Do you know what happens if pvc burns? Thats right, noone knows beucase they all died. J/k, but seriously its baddddd stuff so dont use it in the engine compartment. Goto Jcwhitney.com and get some mandrel bent aluminized steel tubing, if you get an 180 you can cut it up to fit (on some cars) Anyway go here and check, this is where I got the idea. www.teamdelsol.com

I actually just bought my stuff on wed/thur, so it should be here monday. I also got an accel blue filter from jcwhitney. It was all about 70$ with shipping, for the pipe and filter. And about another 5 or 10$ for the clamps and stuff from lowes (you can rig something up like I did from home depot using plumbers fittings. I like them becuase they have aluminum coverings on them already, It was worth the extra 2 or 3$ to make it look nice.).

Ill post something on monday or tuesday when I get it, and tell you how it went. It probably wont have pictures unless I can find a half used roll of film in a camera somewhere.

BTW you can use the same tubing (maybe in a different diameter) for the exaust tubing as well (thats what its really made for).

PVC will not burn or melt in an engine bay (my friend make an intake out of PVC and it worked fine), so don't worry.

the quietest exhaust i have heard is apexi WS (world sport). Since you want to do custom all the way back, try to find just the muffler (the 88-91 hb axel back part MIGHT work)

The reason I say that, is not becuase it melts at 100 some degrees, but if it were to fall or break somehow, it would suck. Have you ever smelled burning plastic, its real bad for you.
Especially if you got in a crash, it would be likely to rub something, and with you possibly stuck in the car, it would be bad.

Rather safe than sorry, It costs maybe another 10$ total to make it out of aluminized steel (only 23$ for the metal)

Well what I did for my intake was.... took the stock one out... and cut off the tube that goes from the air box to right above the radiator. Then I plugged that hole up (dont ask... lol! umm lets just say silicone and a mcdonalds plastic cup! lol) Then I attached a peice of that pipe that I cut off earlier and attached it where it would stick down in that hole where the big tank looking thing was (dont know the technical term but its a big tank thats part of the air intake that goes behind the bumber). Anyways... so know I have a ghetto riged CAI that didnt cost anything and looks almost exactly the same as stock (to the untrained eye). So basically my intake system now consistes of the pipe going from the fuel injection system to the stock airbox... then the pipe coming out of that goes down behind the bumber right in front of the passenger side wheel! Im proud of myself... I spent no money at all and hopefully it will yeild me at least a slight power gain!
