Why is the hatch lighter than the coupe?

I tried searching for this answer in the archives but had no luck. I can't figure out why the hatches are lighter than their coupe counterparts. Both have 2 doors, a backseat, and a trunklid/hatch opening. I would think the hatch cover would be heavier than the trunklid. What is it that makes the hatches lighter than the coupes?

they are smaller, after the back window, the coupe has to go on to the trunk, the hatch just goes straight down and ends there.

Yeah but the hype is not all what it's cracked up to be unless you have a bare bones CX. My girls 99 hatch w/ AC and PS weighs only 80 pounds less than my coupe w/ my swap.

most HB's are lighter because they are smaller. It really depends on what you are comparing it to. a CX vs a EX...well the CX is like 2000 lbs and the EX is like 2600 or so, just because its a hatch compared to a coupe.

My coupe is an EX but if you were reffering to the 6th gen then maybe. I never weighed a 6th gen coupe.

the CX is what I got. 2108 pounds as far as I know. the next model hatch isnt even more than 100 lbs heavier though is it? cant see how it would be, even with AC/PW/PDL, I dont see it gaining much weight. of course the SI has all the options plus moonroof so it is probably a bit heavier but it still sems like it would be lighter than a coupe. I guess the CX is the only one worth it IF you dont like hatches. the SI only weighs 2390 doesnt it.
