Question 1986.5 Supra Engine Replacement :)

My Supra's old 7M-GE is on its way out. I Could spend big bucks fixing the stock engine, but I want more power. I will need a whole new engine soon...
Can anyone suggest a better replacement than a 27Z-GTE?

Also, with a newer, more powerful engine like the 27Z-GTE, what other mods would I have to have done to my car.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Fixing the stock engine should not cost "big bucks" unless you don't know how to do the work yourself. Just do a turbo swap if you actually know what your doing. Seeing a 2JZ in a mk3 is fairly rare, few people have gone through with the swap. I suggest you start searching www.supraforums.com , you should have no trouble finding the answers to all your questions their without even posting. The turbo and 2JZ swaps has been covered 100000000000000 times.

Thats the problem really, I dont know how to do a lot of the work and my supra has the stock 7M-GE without a turbo. I think the piston rings have a fairly bad leak due to the ammount of oil that comes out of my exaust. And since the head gasket, head bolt etc. have never had any repair or upgrade, I'm pretty sure that I'll be experiencing some serious issues with this engine soon. I plan on waiting till it bites the dust and then go and buy a second hand import 2JZ-GTE.
I'll probably have to upgrade a lot of other things aswell, like engine mounts, exaust, diff, clutch, ball joints etc.... lol my wallet is already making a run for it

Bad piston rings are pretty rare on the 7M, it's most likely your valve guides, when you start the car after sitting for a while does it give out a good puff of blue smoke or on decel? Honestly, like it was said in the other post, the 2JZ will be alot of work if you don't know that much about the car, and especially if you can't custom fab anything. To give some advice here, if you don't have alot of money, or you like having money, don't do any turbo swap, it just leads to wanting more power and spending more money , just rebuild the GE now, before it gets BHG or rod knock, with all ARP bolts, have the head and block prepped for a MHG (metal head gasket), and get some good clevite bearings and it'll last you forever and be ultra reliable if you did the rebuild right. Really most of the stuff you listed for the 2JZ swap will not need to be touched, basicly all it needs are the motor and tranny mounts need to be custom fabbed, speedo cable, throttle cable, driveshaft, exhaust, and lots of electronics work.

7M-GE to 7M-GTE in a 1986.5 Supra

Ive done a lot of research since my last posts and I'm now certain that the 2jz swap is 'out of my league' and not very cost effective

Ive been looking online at local japanese motor importers, and it seems that a rebuilt 7M-GTE is a much better upgrade for my car. Ive seen 7M-GTEs with warranty, for only AUD$1600. Compared to AUD$5000 for the 2jz (not including all the headaches installing it).

Toyota also approve of swapping engines with cars that are only 1 year apart, so i'm sure it will be a strait forward swap from 7M-GE to 7M-GTE.
