More Engine help please
Sorry everyone, i bet yer getting really annoyed with all my engine questions. haha this is the last im hoping.
anyway I was looking into the B16A engines and noticed that it seems the B16A 1st generation engines are for cars 1992 and older and the B16A engines are only for the 1993 cars and older. In California its illegal to put an engine in your car thats older then your car is. I have teh 1993 Honda Del Sol, and i noticed a huge price difference between both generations. I really want to have teh 1st generation cause it has the same amount of hp as the 2nd gen but for about 800 dollars less. Can i put the 1st generation, and i don't mean will it fit, in my car w/o getting in trouble with the law people or am i going to have to spend the extra money on teh Second Gen?

Your car is an OBD-I car. The 92+ B16A would be ODB-I/II (depending on the year). The 1st gen B16A's are non-OBD. That won't fly with the CARB people. You need an ODB motor. It is possible to put an OBD-II motor into an OBD-I car, and convert it to OBD-I. But if you are worried about legality, I can tell you right now, the cheaper 1st gen is a non-OBD motor. You need a motor that is OBD I/II (if it's II, convert it to OBD I). Your best bet would be to spend the extra money, and get a 92+ OBD-I/II B16A for your car. Also, you have to put all the emissions control equipment on, so if you get an OBD-II motor and convert it to OBD-I, you'll still need to leave the non-functioning OBD-II equipment on or you'll fail the visual inspection. I hope this helps you a bit.

the 2nd gen b16a was also using a Hydraulic tranny where the 1st gen uses a cable, so without spending another 500 to convert that over, just order up a b16a3 for you car OBDI

Re: More Engine help please
I have two ideas.
im going to either buy a new engine or im going to save up 3 grand and sell my del sol i have now. Then ill use the money to buy a new '94 Sol wiht a VTEC engine already placed in it. This way i don't have to worry about anything f'ing up wiht the engine swap. How much do you think the most someone's going to spen on a 1993 Very well kept Del Sol 117,000 miles. everythign is perfect (passenger window is a little slow). But there is nothign really wrong with it. |

its best just to buy the 2nd gen. It will be OBDI and the tranny will be hydroulic. If you buy the OBD0, the tranny will be cable and its also about 10hp less than the OBDI version. go to www.hmotorsonline.com and check out their 2nd gen B16's.

30003 - B16A 92-93 Integra (XSi) Complete Change Over 170Hp 113Trq 10.4 Compression (JDM OBD I) $ 1799.00 Plus shipping and handling. Would that work in my sol even though it says for the Integra? or would i have to go with the 30004 - B16A 92-95 (SiR-II) Motor, Tranny, ECU 170Hp 113Trq 10.4 Compression (JDM) $ 1799.00 Plus shipping and handling this is turning out to be more of a project then i first thought. but in the end is when there'll be much fun
