More Engine help please

Sorry everyone, i bet yer getting really annoyed with all my engine questions. haha this is the last im hoping.

anyway

I was looking into the B16A engines and noticed that it seems the B16A 1st generation engines are for cars 1992 and older and the B16A engines are only for the 1993 cars and older. In California its illegal to put an engine in your car thats older then your car is. I have teh 1993 Honda Del Sol, and i noticed a huge price difference between both generations. I really want to have teh 1st generation cause it has the same amount of hp as the 2nd gen but for about 800 dollars less.

Can i put the 1st generation, and i don't mean will it fit, in my car w/o getting in trouble with the law people or am i going to have to spend the extra money on teh Second Gen?

Your car is an OBD-I car. The 92+ B16A would be ODB-I/II (depending on the year). The 1st gen B16A's are non-OBD. That won't fly with the CARB people. You need an ODB motor. It is possible to put an OBD-II motor into an OBD-I car, and convert it to OBD-I. But if you are worried about legality, I can tell you right now, the cheaper 1st gen is a non-OBD motor. You need a motor that is OBD I/II (if it's II, convert it to OBD I). Your best bet would be to spend the extra money, and get a 92+ OBD-I/II B16A for your car. Also, you have to put all the emissions control equipment on, so if you get an OBD-II motor and convert it to OBD-I, you'll still need to leave the non-functioning OBD-II equipment on or you'll fail the visual inspection. I hope this helps you a bit.

Well, I suppose it is possible to shove the 1st gen in there, but it won't pass the emissions junk since it's all non-OBD, you could try to convert it to OBD-I. I have heard of it being tried, but don't know how sussessful it is in terms of functions OBD-I and the resulting emissons controls that effects. The safest (and IMO smartest) route to go is to get the 2nd gen, 92+ B16A. That will be an OBD-I or II motor, so it's legal, and it should help keep CARB happy. Also, the 1st gen is a cable tranny, yours is a hydro tranny. If you where to try to put the 1st gen in, you'd need to get the cable-hydro conversin kit from Hasport. That's like $300 more right there, not including install. Since you are worried about CARB and legality, you probably should just get the 92+ B16A. Just make sure to keep all the emissions control equipment intact, even the parts you may not need to hook up (if you convert an OBD-II motor to an OBD-I). Sorry to confuse you more, lol. To put it simple, yes, that would be the safest route in terms of trying to comply with california vehicular and CARB law.

the 2nd gen b16a was also using a Hydraulic tranny where the 1st gen uses a cable, so without spending another 500 to convert that over, just order up a b16a3 for you car OBDI

Re: More Engine help please

I have two ideas.
im going to either buy a new engine or im going to save up 3 grand and sell my del sol i have now. Then ill use the money to buy a new '94 Sol wiht a VTEC engine already placed in it. This way i don't have to worry about anything f'ing up wiht the engine swap. How much do you think the most someone's going to spen on a 1993 Very well kept Del Sol 117,000 miles. everythign is perfect (passenger window is a little slow). But there is nothign really wrong with it.

its best just to buy the 2nd gen. It will be OBDI and the tranny will be hydroulic. If you buy the OBD0, the tranny will be cable and its also about 10hp less than the OBDI version. go to www.hmotorsonline.com and check out their 2nd gen B16's.

Thank you for saying that. Thats what I told him too. To the guy with the Del Sol, don't sell it. The USDM B16A2 is the B16A in the Del Sol vtec, you don't need to sell your sol, just get that motor if you want to get the Del Sol vtec motor. Your car IS A HYDRO TRANNY. Not a Cable tranny. The 2nd Gen (92+) JDM B16A's, as well as the USDM B16A2 and B16A3 are all Hydro, only the first gen JDM 88-91 B16A motors are cable tranny and non-OBD. The B16A2 should be OBD-I (it's the Del Sol B16A), the B16A3 is OBD-II. With the JDM B16A's, any 2nd gen B16A will be a Hyrdo tranny and OBD-I or OBD-II (depending on the motors production year, I know 92-95 is OBD-I. Either way, you can get ANY of these 92+ 2nd gen B16A's, USDM or JDM. All will have the hydro tranny, like your car is, no conversion needed. If you by change get an OBD-II B16A, you can convert is fairly easily to OBD-I. DOn't get discourged, It's all easy stuff. JUst listen to me and the guy above. You need a 2nd Gen (92+) B16A, OBD-I, or a USDM B16A2. Both are OBD-I (easier than getting an OBD-II and converting) and both have a hydro tranny. Remember, the B16A2 is the motor in the Del Sol Vtec, so you don't need to dump your car to get that motor, just buy that motor, tranny, and ecu and swap em in.

Great thanks. I went to the site and found

30003 - B16A 92-93 Integra (XSi) Complete Change Over
170Hp 113Trq 10.4 Compression (JDM OBD I)
$ 1799.00 Plus shipping and handling.

Would that work in my sol even though it says for the Integra?
or would i have to go with the

30004 - B16A 92-95 (SiR-II) Motor, Tranny, ECU
170Hp 113Trq 10.4 Compression (JDM)
$ 1799.00 Plus shipping and handling

this is turning out to be more of a project then i first thought. but in the end is when there'll be much fun

The XSi is a cable tranny and the SiR-II is a hydro tranny, the SiR-II will drop right in, and the XSi would need a hydro-cable conversion kit (hasport makes one). In Civics, 88-91 is a cable tranny, 92+ is a hydro tranny. In Integras, 94+ is a hydro, the 90-93 (any below 94) are calbe tranny's. The same goes for USDM motors. Also, remember, you have a 94 Del Sol, correct? You also need the motor to be the same year or newer as the chassis, as you stated above. The SiR-II would then be fine in that aspect too (besides being OBD-I and Hydro tranny). Hope this helps.

Well, thats better, in the aspect that you can put in a 93+ motor and be CARB legal instead of 94+, since techincally, you have to have the motor newer than the car. Thats all I was refering to by you have a 94, correct. Everything we said still holds true. You'll be fine with a USDM B16A2, or A3, or a JDM SiR-II. The A2 is from the Del Sol Vtec, the A3 the 99-00 SI, and the SiR-II is from 92+ civics, so if you are a 93, chances are you'll be fine. It's from the same basic year and it's still OBD-I, you'll be fine.
