Mtn. Bikers what should I do?

Ok here is whats up. I have according to the bike shop cracked my bottom bracket a bontrager race light(i think). It still seems to be rideable ive been riding it around for a week since they told me that. And i think there is something wrong with my bottom bracket because when you going at it and are out of the saddle like on a sprint or an up hill you can her a poping that sounds like its comeing from the bottom brackte.

But im wondering if its worth it to get my bike fixed. Its a trek 4900. Recentley I got new cabels on my bike. And guess what some fucktard while i was gone(im at college and had my bike out side my room locked up inside but like in the commons of my dorm) pulled my cabels out and the front deralluer cable was pulled out of its housing and tied around my handel bars. This pissed me off real bad it took me a good while to get it back to working order. But they hurt the cables and there brand fucking new not even 2wks old. The other day i spent a gob of money on my bike for new tires, a new innertube, front rim trued, new cables, new break pads. And they told me after they were done on there test ride to make sure it was working well they discovered that bottom bracket had some dammage.

So on my bike a trek 4900 is it worth it to get the bottom bracket fixed?

Okay, so you're asking this question but now I will ask you some questions (I'm not familiar with the 4900's spec).

What crankset does the bike have.
Does the BB have a splined crank interface or square?

You can't ride around too long with a damaged BB, if it seizes while you're riding you risk personal injury as well as possible damage to the frame(extreme case), but at best more cost than if you just replaced the BB now while the damage is minor.

Find out if there is a cheaper BB that will do the same job, there is a chance there is depending on the type of BB/crank interface the bike has.

The noise you're describing sounds like the BB has a crack and the bearings aren't rolling quite like they're supposed to.

At the end of the day, I would replace it before it can become a problem.

Well i dont know what the bb is on the bike. it has the race light crank set. But i think the bb is diffrent. They told me at the bike shop that the way i ride i should be spending about 100 bucks so i can get one taht will last. And well it hasent seized up yet but im scared it will. I think your right with the analysis at the end of what you have said. but i wonder if spending 100 bucks or so now or just wait till it breaks and then get an over all better bike.

This could be a good question to ask over at www.bikeforums.net ... I think you'll find more people who know about bikes over there.

If I were you, I'd get it replaced. No point throwing out a $500 just for the sake of a BB.

Oh, and when it breaks, you'll know about it and wish you'd done something proactively.

Ive broken a bottom bracket before but it dident have any signs of fixing to break. And nope it was not a fun experience. I was on the ground for awhile.
