My 1995 Pontiac Grand Am 2.3 liter dual over head cam quad 4 has recently developed a problem so that when it starts and is shifted into drive immedeatly stalls. The day it started the car started as normal, I pulled out of my driveway, and about 100 yards down the road it started to jerk a little bit then stalled. I was able to get it restarted, but when I shifted the transaxle into drive it stalled immediently. So I restarted it put the transaxle into reverse and the engine did not stall, and I nwas able to drive it home in reverse. The engine still started fine. A mechanic told me it was the ignition module, the coil were burnt out becuse the spark plugs were drawing to many amps thru the module. however the car still started and was able to drive in reverse.

Re: 95 Grand Am runs in reverse, stalls in drive
What may be going on is that the torque converter clutch is stuck on.

Your car is equipped with an overdrive transmission. Sometimes the gearing inside the trans will overcome the force needed to overcome the clutch being stuck on...(sounds wierd but you will have to trust me on this one)
I would suggest you take your car to the dealer and have them look at it..it seems that the garage you have taken it to really doesn't know whats going on and is guessing.....that will cost you more money in the end. From the sounds of what your describing and the fact that I can't see the problem occurring, I would lean in the direction of the transmission converter clutch.

Had a similiar problem with a '93. I could dirve the car for maybe 15 minutes around town, then when I had to slow for a light or sign the car would jerk and then stall. Once the car was shut off and sitting for a while it would start and run fine until I came to a stop then stall again. Turns out the torque converter was sticking in the high gear.

my 95 grand am started doing exactly the same thing ... it would run forever in reverse and a little in drive and drive started getting worse where when i would put in in d it wold die right away,.....i took it to the shop and they found ground wires down by the fan were streching when i put it in drive the motor would jump just enough to jerk the wires....so have the gound wires checked...hope this helps.......

My 90 did the same thing. Seems to a common problem with I guess would be considered 2nd generation GA's??
All I did to "fix" the problem was unplug the TCC solenoid from the tranmission. Its ran fine (well w/o the TCC problem) for 3 years now. The only real side effect is slight lower gas mileage. |

3rd generation actually Ultraspaceman. The first one was a big boat with a 7.3 litre in it. I agree with Merlin , but it wouldnt hurt to check those wires.

I just had my daughters 89 Grand am fixed for this.It was the switch in the transmission that locks up the torque convertor. It is a common problem with the three speed automatic.Just took forever to find the right person that new what was happing.I think it was about 300 dollars at the transmission shop. She also has the quad 4.
