84 vette, good buy?

hey, new to the boards
i'm looking at buying an 84 vette and want to know if i should or not
right now i own a 92 camaro rs and was looking to buy another camaro when i came across an 84 vette
it has the z51 suspension, targa top, cassette, etc.
the interior is completely out and it needs to be put in and needs paint
plus it has 175,000 miles on it and the tranny is leaking (auto)
i looked it up on kbb.com and it listed around 2500-3000
do i really want this? will it be a good car? i heard the crossfire injection isnt the greatest, so, i mean, i'm completely new to corvettes pretty much, though i do know a good deal about camaros/firebirds
do they respond well to mods?

edit: also, what kind of sound system do these have? as in, how many speakers, good hu?

84 vette

ya man i just bought a 84 vette two weeks ago and i LOVE it. i got it for 5000 AND it has 64000 original miles. the 85 and ups has tuned port injection which is a whole lot better. my dad had and 85 and i really cant tell the diff. between them. on paper the 85 has 25 more horses but the 84 can fly. theres a little more in the throttle response of the 84. it has a 6 speaker bose system with an am/fm cassete. all and all im am very plaesed with it. its not the best vette to buy but sounds like ur gettin a deal. i say get it.

THe 84 is pretty slow when it comes to vettes, figure mid to low 15's in the 1/4. The cross fire injection is OK, but you really can't do much to make it faster. There are some aftermarket intakes, but in the long run , it'd be better to have a TPI set up( TPI vettes are usually in the low to mid 14's). The 84's with the Z51 will ride pretty harsh, but handles great. A paint job will probably run a minimum of $3K , for a good one. If you can get it for $2500 or less, it'd be a good deal. Corvettes are one of the easiest cars to work on. As for the sound system, if you're going to put an aftermarket one in , you need to A) get a Bose adaptor if you want to retain the stock speakers, or B) remove everything and put your own stuff in. I've owned an 84 & an 85 before,

GM went through some quality control issues in the mid 80's.
My grandpa had an 84 Vette-from the stories I've heard, the car definitly had a lot of problems. Don't get me wrong-he always tells me how awesome of a car it was, but he also told me how he had continuing problems with parts of the car-for instance-the windsheild always leaked. He took it in to find out that the car had the windsheild installed crooked in the factory and was never seen, nor corected before it left. The paint was also supposadly applied pretty badly, and would crack and spiderweb. In your case, you shouldn't have this problem.
It really comes down to how much you want to invest in the car. It'll definitly be nice, and probably pretty collectible soon, being the first year of that generation Vette. Good luck with your choice, and have fun with it if you get the car!

Re: 84 vette, good buy?

84's were not that great of a car. the tpi motor that started in 85 was much better. from what i have seen, the 84's have so many problems which make it one of the least desirable corvettes to own. if you are truly looking to get a good c4 i would look at 1985 and up. hope this helps.

Re: 84 vette, good buy?

the 84 is a pain in the arse but if you have the money and time you can do it. manifold, cam, heads, pulley's, a new differential, exhaust.....the list goes on. I own one I bought for about 5k and I've put like 12 into it for parts alone. 400 hp and now I wonder if it was worth it. tip is good but not before 88, to many computer issues I've discovered. if you want to know how to boost your 84 ask me and I"l give you a list of parts you used, but be prepared to spend some serious $$$

RESPONSE : Hot off the press value on a 1984 is : $5500 in 'average condition' . Honestly, i wouldnt buy it because of the mileage and trans leaking. I can tell you , that, youre going to be in for some expense to get the car back to reliable shape. Theres bound to be alot of parts that havent been replaced yet. Engine rebuild and valve job for sure in the next 25 k miles if it hasnt been done already. If youre good at working on cars, then that makes a bit of difference..but expect it to be a bit of a money pit . Frankly, 1984's do not have a good reputation amongst corvette mechanics or in the hobby , in general . It was the first year of the C4 generation and it had its share of problems . Just my thoughts.

Re: 84 vette, good buy?

I rechecked the xram site, I have the manifold, but there aren't any tb units listed. I'm just having mine bored and sleeved at my shop with some new injectors(expensive!!!). and I found out today edlebrock puts out a conversion kit for the crossfire system into a 4bbl carb but it is not emissions legal....go figure
