help with color for 73 duster

I'm sixteen and really like muscle cars so I got a 73 duster for my first car for 500 dollars. It is in need of a major paint job and I'm going to have the local vocational school do it (they do it for free). The only prblem is that I don't know what colors they came in and I cant't find any sites with this informatiion. I want it to be original. Does anybody have any suggestion for the color that I sshould paint it ? Thank you

Re: help with color for 73 duster

I always liked the wild colors that Plymouth used in the early '70s. Here is a link to a great one in Moulin Rouge.

Re: motor

A 318 V8 should be pretty cheap. Of course, a 340 V8 would be even better.

How about a 273 solid cam screamer? LOL, well atleast thats what I'm putting in my 73' Valiant. People might think I'm crazy for going to less cubic inches, but I just say it's over twice the HP and still 1.5 times the torque even though it's less CID. All I need is higher stall and gears, and this thing is gonna rip. 320 dyno'ed HP at 5500 RPM, and 340 ft lbs at 4000 RPM. Thats all stock ports/valves, .040 overbore, comp cams 270s cam with [email protected]'' duration and .468'' lift. Not too mild but not too wild of a cam, I'm going to use 2100 stall and 3.55 gears.

Anyway, back to the duster. What color is the interior? It has to match, but black goes with anything. I have green/tan interior in my Valiant, but I'm getting it painted black. So you see since I got green interior painting the car blue would look pretty stupid.

man if your gonna drop a different v8 in the car then go for at least a 340 or 360. pulling a v6 for a 273 is pretty pointless in my opinion.. if you want you could just pull the slant 6 out and rebuild it with high performance parts. There are lots of slant 6 clubs out there that have tons of tricks in getting horsies out of those things and they run forever!
i only wish i could get the gas mileage you are getting with that 6... my 440 charger eats up a gallon every 7 miles... but hey.. its worth it

I pulled the 318 out of my Valiant to put in a 273! Twice the HP, better gas mileage. It's certainly not pointless. BTW thats 320 HP with stock valves and ports. I can fit 1.84/1.60 valves(stock is 1.78/1.50), port and mill heads to get atleast 9.5:1 compression, maybe 10:1, and put in a different cam and have over 400 HP easy. Probably 425. You think 425 HP is pointless? 15 MPG is what I get. Well, right now it has the stock 7.25 diff with 2.76 gears. Soon I'm swapping to an 8.25 sure-grip with 3.91 gears. I'm sure the highway mileage will dwindle significantly.

i have a 74 dusteer with a 360 that is being rebiult by http://www.moparengineswest.com/ and its gona be a 420+ hp car. my best guess would be to go with 340 or 360. 340 has a good gas to power ratio and the 360 has more of a punch. the guy that is rebuilding mine yhas a bunch of blocks layiung around 318s, 340s,360s and some hemis. My car is a "smurf blue" kinda thing that was a 1 year color with white and black interior. You should got to some car show and see how you like differant colors. some good places to get parts for your car would be yearone.com, paddockparts.com, jegs.com, and summitracing.com . Good luck and to make it sound better get some 2 chamber mufflers on it or no mufflers at all!

Re: help with color for 73 duster

Hi, I just purchased a 73 plymouth duster. I was wondering what color I should do the interior. I am painting the exterior its original color(kind of a bright red). So I was wondering what color you think i should paint it? Also me and my dad are puting a 340m in it with a six pack, does that seem like a good idea? I want lots of power but not too expensive of a engine.

twice the hp lol ya when pigs fly acually a 273 would need quite a few upgrade to even equal the hp of a stock 318 and would get worse fuel economy. Combin this with the fact that the 273 won't have hardenend valve seats and it would be a poor disision to replace the 318 with

Re: help with color for 73 duster

Black is the universal color. Too bad it's not a GoldDuster or I'd say that sickly yellow color would be a good plan. As for the engine? 360. I've seen one (Supercharged, of course) that ran an well under an 11.5 because that's what my friends truck ran.
