I have one broken seat in the back, the one by the side door. I took the material off and found that it is made of metal tubing with a tin piece welded to the tubing. The metal is so thin that it ripped a hole through the tubing where the spot weld is.
Today I was in my driveway when I leaned back to zip up my jacket when the drivers seat broke off on the right side where it attach's to the base. It turns out the the bolt that holds the seat to the base on the right hand side broke in half. It would be the forward bolt. Just a note that the seats were wobbly from day one. I bought it as a Certified GM used vehicle. I checked the front passenger seat while was at it and found the bolts are very loose. I am glad this happened in my driveway, I can't imanage what would have happened if I was on the highway. Is this crazy or what. Any one having this problem? If the seats in the back are not solid chances are that they have broken. Last edited by shreck; 09-30-2003 at 12:23 PM. |

Re: 96 Pontiac Transport Broken Seats
I have had the same problem with a '94 Trans Sport. The drivers side seat now 'leans' toward the right (middle) side. Were you able to fix the seat?

It was the bolt that broke in half, and because the other bolt was so loose (from day one) the seat fell right back. I was able to get the very long bolt out easly with a pair of vise grips from the under side of the seat. I removed the seat from the base to do this.
I would suggest that you check the passenger seat as well. Good luck |

Re: 96 Pontiac Transport Broken Seats
I think there was a GM recall for problems with the front seats breaking. It might only have been in Canada, not sure but worth checking.

Recalls are a joke, it gives the dealer the right to rip you off.
Recalls are a joke,
it gives the dealer the right to rip you off. Like stealing parts off my van.The only recall that made sence was the spare tire falling off, if it means that some fault could cause some serious damage and GM could be found liable they might do something about it. But if the seat braks off while in motion on the highway is not a big deal I guess. Otherwise they might have advised the owners. Just my 2cents. |

There was a recall for the bolts in the seats by GM usually this recall is life long. The bolts wear and break, I've even had the seat base frame break. Had to dismantle the whole seat and have base welded. Not too hard of a job seat will come apart easily.

Thanks for your response
No notice of a recall has ever been issued in Canada for this problem that I am aware of, I have received the recall for the steering rack bearing and the spare tire.
I have since repaired the seat my self with new bolts. My guess is that the bolts were never tightened to spec's at the factory causing them to break from forward and backward movement from stopping and going. The upper back seat frame beside the door is broken as well (still). Was there a recall for this? |
