turbo info

Ok i am very new with the whole turbo thing..... i am just curious how they work.....how bad do they effect your engines durability and the main thing is can you turbo a car and still be able to drive it as a everyday use? even in rain and all? Because i know sometimes if you suck water in you can hydrolock ur engine but i am so confused wiht turbos anything would help.
