Exclamation 96 Eclipse unfindable problem

I recently acquired a 1996 Eclipse RS. Shortly after, the car started to have problems. So I decide to take it to a mechanic, numerous in fact. None that were successful in even locating the problem, much less fixing it. The problem is this : after driving for a period of time, ranging in time, the car starts to lose power, stall even. Unless I use the accelerator to keep the RPM's up. The Rpm's drop dramatically. Then the problem only seems to last for a short period, 5 minutes or so, then the car is back to normal. If I have to come to a stop while the problem is occuring, I have to perform the same thing with the accelator or it will shut off. As long as the car is in gear and in motion, it does not completely stall out, only losing power, causing the engine to slow down and make acceleration difficult unless you practically floor it. I have had numerous mechanics check this problem, and have even had diagnostics done 3 times. Yet no one seems to be able to help me pinpoint this problem. I am in desperate need of someone to help me. If you can, PLEASE!

I have had a verry similar problem with a previous vehicle. one thing you need to check verry thoroughly is the wiring harness along your engine. especially between the firewall and the engine. If you have a wire that melted, and is grounding out when the engine is at idle, it will cause it to die. At higher RPMs the engine doesn't vibrate as much, so the wire isn't touching the motor, making it seem like it's running fine. When they did the engine diagnostic was the car running?

Yes the car was running, but the problem occurs when the car is idling as well as in motion. It seems to want to surge a little, but as long as you hold the accelerator down, it will keep running. But the RPM's are going up and down when the accelerator is held at a steady placement when idling during the problem times.

that sounds a lot like the alternator going dead. I remember driving a Grand Prix Richard Petty Edition and it seemed to lose electrical and motor power unless i reved a little, but then it just died, and it wouldn't start up. I am not saying that is your problem, mainly because nobody found it yet, but usually you don't find the alternator until it's dead.

I have a '96 Eclipse which had the exact same problem.

Read carefully: It's very likely carbon buildup in the throttle body. When the engine's cold, carbon on the throttle plate sticks to the opening of the throttle body. As it heats up, the problem goes away because the carbon melts and won't stick anymore. This causes the motor to idle too low & rough and even die at low temperatures. All you have to do to fix this problem is get some throttle body cleaner spray, remove the intake pipe, and have someone spray the cleaner into the open throttle body while you rev the motor. Do this until it's thoroughly cleaned.

Thank you for the help, but the car doesn't act up until the engine starts to get some warmth to it. While the car is still cool it runs normal.

YEAH MY CAR WAS DOING THAT TOO FOR A LIL WHILE. I HAVE A 92. SO ONE DAY I JUST STARTED IT UP AND OPEND THE HOOD, AND RIGHT BY THE THROTTLE BODY THERE WAS A LIL SCREW THAT ADJUSTED THE TENSION ON THE THROTTLE SO WHEN YOU DIDNT HAVE YOUR FOOT ON THE PEDAL IT KEPT THE CAR AT A CERTAIN IDEL OR FROM WANTING TO CUT OFF ON YOU.

Re: 96 Eclipse unfindable problem

i had a similar problem like that too. this may not be it, but it's still a good thing to look for. have a smog test. it will check for a vacuum leak. i had mine done and fixed and haven't had a problem ever again.
