I was thinking of purchasing a used GTi. What year should I buy to tune it up nicely? Thanks!

Doesn't matter if you are going to swap a vr6 in it and then supercharge it

Buy a 1992 mk2 gti 16v

Re: GTi....Mk what?

go with whatever is more important to you. Mk1 (aka Rabbit) will get you a much lighter, quicker feeling car, with a huge parts base. But stock their power is less than other GTI models. Mk2 is a nice balance, excellent power especially in 2.0 16v form, and yet still light. Mk3 is where the GTI started to get bloated, but many people prefer the looks of the Mk3 to the earlier ones. If you get a Mk3 i recommend going Vr6. Same with a Mk4.

i suggest anything with the 1.8t. this engine is BAD ASS! stock the VR6 may whoop it but, the suped up 1.8t will smack the crap out of a VR6 any day!

Re: GTi....Mk what?

No Mk3 did not come with a 1.8t. And there are many more options then just blindly swapping in a new engine. For much less than the cost of a 1.8t swap, you could put a 2.0 16v engine on throttle bodies, making well over 200hp, with instant throttle response.
All in all its up to you, and you might wanna take each different option for a test drive, as they all have very different characteristics (Vr6 grunt, 2.0 16v revviness)

Re: GTi....Mk what?

Mk1, all wheel drive, and a 1.8t under the bonnet. That's all you need to know.

Re: GTi....Mk what?

go with a mk2 gti shell is much lighter than the newer models and looks a hell of a lot better than the fat shopping trollies that are around from mk3 onwards.

engine wise go all out and transplant a r32 engine into it and then convert the drive train to all wheel drive, to quote mazda

"zoom zoom"

Re: GTi....Mk what?

I met this guy once that had this old rabbit truck. He had put a vr6 sideways in the front half of the truck bed and had it RWD.
It was running in the mid 13's (around that, I can't be sure) at a show last summer.
And he was talking about slappin' a turbo on it for this year's race/ show season.
