How to replace alternator belt on 83 Civic?

Sorry if this question may seem elementary. I've done very little car work. I want to replace the alternator belt on my Civic, though, and I'm having problems. I know how to move the alternator up and down, but I can't get the belt on. It seems that the mounting bracket is totally in the way of the belt and that the alternator is positioned so far forward that I can't slip the belt over the pulley. Any wisdom or links on how to do this?
