I just bought a used stock 99 civic ex coupe! Unfortunately it is an automatic, I couldn't beat the price of $8000 with only 49,000miles on it.
The transmission seems to shift rather rough at times. I did notice that the transmission dip stick pulls out rather easily. I ordered a new one. Hopefully that will help. There are no mods on this car yet. I've only changed the oil and put a new air filter in it. I bought this car from a 35 year old lady who bought it new and did all city driving. PROBLEM!!! I floored it on the highway today. It dropped down to 3rd and held until about 100mph/7000rpm. Shifted into fourth and nothing. It didn't top out but I couldn't get it to go faster than 105mph. That doesn't seem right. My 98 Accord will top out at about 125mph with no mods. Any suggestions? I think I'm gonna pull the battery cable to reset the computer and try again. |

I HIGHLY doubt a new tranny dipstick will help the problem. Have you had the fluid changed in the transmission or just the engine oil? If you have not had the transmission fluid changed, do so. Also, comparing top speed between an Accord and a Civic doesn't say a whole lot considering they are totally different cars.

I'm guessing he means it just stopped going any faster... My car does the same thing when thrown into 5th at over 100.

To clarify, I'm buying a new tranny stick because it is sooo loose that it is spitting out tranny fluid a little bit. The car just didn't go any faster. No governor or limiter kicked in or nothing. I know there is no comparison between a civic and an accord. My point was that the civic stock should top out at about 120mph. From what I've read. I've only changed the oil. Not the tranny fluid yet. shifting at 7000rpm is correct. However a top speed of 105mph to my knowledge isn't. I mean I only gained 5mph in fouth gear. Or if I manually shift it I hit 105 in third and get nothing in 4th. It doesn't go any faster it just sits there.

My Civic with cold air intake, header, high flow cat, and full exhaust will only get up to about 125 in 4th gear... as soon as I hit 5th I don't go any faster. I dunno, but for a stock automatic Civic that might be about right?

My DX engine would get to about 120 in 4th, and when I put it into 5th is would actually slow down! lol... memories *sniff*
Get your tranny fluid changed, you should be alright. I don't remember how much to put in, I think it's like 2 quarts ?? |

what are you going 100+ MPH in a stock civic that you just bought anyways? are you trying to fuck it up? who cares how fast it goes, just treat it like it should be treated....

OK, that was uncalled for. Yes, it is a fairly new SOHC used EX civic. I checked everything out and changed the oil in it and have driven it 2000miles before I decided to do that because I didn't want to fuk it up. I had to see if all of the little horsepower it has is there. It didn't appear to me to have it so I decided to ask on this forum, because to my knowledge it is supposed to top out at 120mph which it didn't and since it didn't I wanted to figure out why. That was all. I compared it to my accord because it is much heavier and only has a little more horsepower. Hell a geo metro can go faster than 100mph. I could have bought whatever I wanted but I chose the civic because I drive a 100 miles a day and gas was killing me in my other car. Besides I don't want to fuk it up, but if I did, that would give me a good excuse to put a DOHC in it.

oh and to add. Why the hell does it have a final gear if you can't go any faster in it....gas mileage. Oh I have an old 91 piece of crap minivan I use to haul stuff around in that'll go faster than 100mph and it's a tank. So, you must be some little kid that thinks he knows what he's talking about or mommy and daddy must have bought your car for you.
