use a very fine grade paper (1000+ grit) and just remove very small amounts at a time. keep checking your progress, if you use to heavy a sandpaper you will remove far too much in one go.
Just take your time, and use very very fine paper to finish the piece for paint |

I find it hard to get a smooth surface on things that are 'irregular' shaped. I always seem to dig a gouge somewhere or end up with an 'uneven' job. I've started using rubbing compound to do some of the finish sanding on these pieces. Just put a little on a toothbrush, and scrub away.
FYI, the stuff I use is just the Turtle Wax brand normally used for cars. It comes in a red 'tub' about 2" high and 4-5" across and will last me forever. It's quite abrasive and does a good job. Just rinse the part off and with soapy water and another toothbrush when you're done. Note that it is quite a bit more abrasive than polishing compound that many people use here for their final paint treatment, so don't confuse the two. Murray |
